I am acounsellor, so I soppose I come at this book from a different angle to some of the people who might be drawn to read it, but don't be put off if you are not into 'all that head-shrinking stuff'(as my partner calls it), It's a great read nontheless. The book is written by Irvine Yalom; a man who has contributed a great deal to the understanding of therapy and how and why it works, or sometimes doesn't! In the book we get to see the man in action in the therapy room working with people who battle with the stuff that gives us all headaches at different times in our lives. It is sometimes sad or puzzling, tragic and touching. The fact that the good therapist sometimes makes mistakes or puts his foot in it is amusing also. Certainly any counsellor would agonize over the issues in the same way,..if they were honest. But what can you do with a woman in her 70's who is obsessed in a head-over-heels kind of way with a younger man who she hasn't seen for eight years? Forget the age..it happens to us all. What are the three unopened letters about that bring absolute fear and terror into another man's life? What about the obese woman who even the therapist feels aversion for? The honesty and true intent to be helpful are wonderful to behold, as each client brings with him sad and moving life stories. Yet this is an easy book to red, each chapter representing a different story and although it raises some heavy issues, it remains facinating and thought provoking. The awfulness of the stories is far out-weighed by the courageous way that people tackle their problems and the warmth and honesty of the therapist who is prepared to hang in there with them, even when he hasn't a clue what's going on either!
