Product Description

Product Description

Stressing the connection between our behaviour towards each other, and our treatment of non-human species, the selections in this sourcebook uphold the conviction that no solution to the problem of human violence is possible until we accept the underlying unity of life, and what this unity, this kinship, demands of the human species. They explore the environmental conscience, making the case for a more holistic compassion and for more educational systems. At the same time they make a case for acknowledging the rights of other creatures, irrespective of consequential benefit to ourselves. Addison, Browning, da Vinci, Dostoevsky, Gandhi, Hardy, Murdoch, Sagan, Schweitzer, Shaw, Thoreau, Tolstoy, Wordsworth and Zola are among those people quoted. The book is suitable for the general reader as well as for students and teachers of humane education.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, 7 Oct 2001
By jwiacobbo@aol.com (Rhode Island, United States) - See all my reviews
This book of quotations is a fine introduction to the importance of ethical treatment of animals to many of the world's great thinkers - past and present. Words of wisdom from Shaw, Tolstoy, Salt, the Shelleys, and numerous other notables are within these pages. An excellent resource for students, writers, and other researchers to mine for literary and philosophical treasures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensible reference book for writers, thinkers, and speakers, 17 May 2006

(REAL NAME)

If you've been looking for a reference book that brings together the quotes and thoughts of people who are on the forefront of being able to express why compassion for all sentient individuals is so meaningful and important, then your search has ended with this book.

This book details who influenced Gandhi's consciousness and why and reflects on why Peter Singer may be so misunderstood by some in our culture today as just two of countless examples of the depth of this book.

Lots and lots of quotes in here....if you are like me, and you find poignant quotes to be an effective way to get a point through, you will not be at all disappointed.

Get this book while you still can....it is becoming increasingly more difficult to find a copy.
