4.0 out of 5 stars A chilling masterpiece, 25 Feb 2003
I first read this book as a kid and it frightened the pants off me. It's one of those rare books that actually make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. You experience all the cold dread, uncertainty and fear that the main character goes through.
I won't give away too much of the plot, but it revolves around a shipwreck excavation and the discovery of a large copper container. The fishing village near where it was found soon falls foul to the power of an ancient, demonic force and, quite literally, all hell breaks loose.
This is one of the best horror stories I have read for a long time. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys being scared.

4.0 out of 5 stars to be read on a dark and stormy night when SOMEONE is home ., 24 Sep 1999
By bruce@angel-group.com (Louisville, KY, USA) - See all my reviews
Another masterpiece from the unrecognized master of the macabre. As the story opens a tormented and grief stricken husband trying to recover from the loss of his family is seeking solace in sleep.Outside the weather is freezing cold with a drizzling rain and yet he hears the familiar sound of the swing in the frontyard "squeak-squeak squeak" just like it used to when his adored wife used to swing. She is dead. The weather is not fit for man or BEAST to be out in it. As events in this small town become more macabre everything points to an old ship that sunk 200 years ago in the harbor. You won't believe what the ships hold HOLDS!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Pariah, 14 Feb 2004

Another absorbing read from Masterton "The Genius". I have been a horror novel fan for 30 years, and no other horror writer is as consistantly brilliant and imaginative. This story is based on an ancient shipwreck which harbours a malevolent force, the power emanating from the wreck is making the dead walk.....I guarantee you won't be able to put this book down. I am an avid collector of his books, and urge other readers to check out his other stuff too - you WON'T be disappointed.
