Product Description

Review
This is a departure from Perry's enjoyable Victorian crime series. Four days in January concluding with the execution of Louis XVI are minutely examined. While France is in a state of flux and at war with three neighbours, a small group of Royalists plot to free Louis. They fear his death will herald the destruction of their country. While the Citizens rejoice at newfound freedom they are becoming disillusioned with continuing hardships under the new regime, Citizen Bernave plans to smuggle Louis out of France using his mercantile network, but he shares his large house with a group who have divided loyalties and diverse backgrounds which could prove dangerous. Among these is Celie Laurent, a young intelligent widow in reduced circumstances who works as a laundrymaid. While living dangerously as Bernave's Royalist go-between, she still has time to wonder if the equality between men will ever extend to her. Angry citizens attack Bernave's house, suspecting him of hoarding food. In the darkness and confusion Bernave is found lying dead after the retreat of the fustrated mob. A persistent National Guardsman confines everybody to the house and rigorously questions them. The next three days see the household in turmoil with few chances for Celie to reach her contact or realise the details of Bernave's plan. Despair and paranoia are conveyed by detailed repetitions of the mundanities of existence, in depressing bone-chilling weather. Conversations and thoughts of the Royalist group are of necessity repetitive since they are desperately circumscribed. Coincidences play a large part in resolving the plot of this novel of the lives of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. We know the fate of Louis but what of Celie and the fugitive she succours? (Kirkus UK)
