Product Description

Product Description

When Fran Varady is approached by Private Detective Clarence Duke, she mistrusts him on instinct. But she can't ignore what he has to say. Her mother, Eva, who walked out on Fran when she was only seven, has hired Clarence to find her daughter. And for good reason. Eva is dying. So Fran is reunited with the mother she hasn't seen for fifteen years, and is soon to lose again. But the biggest bombshell of all is still to come. Eva has another child - a daughter she gave up soon after her birth - and she wants Fran to find her. It's not an easy task when her mother has sworn her to secrecy and the only clue Fran has is an out-of-date address. And matters aren't helped by the fact that slippery Clarence Duke seems intent on discovering what she's up to. But it's when he's found dead in his car outside Fran's home that the trouble really begins...

5.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as M&M, but still enjoyable, 10 April 2002
By A Customer
This series is not as enjoyable as her Mitchell and Markby one, and yes, if i had the choice (and the power) i would say that she should only write that series.

Nonetheless, this is extremely enjoyable, and a ncie, light, read. If you want a break from the harder kind of fiction we are getting today (see, Mo Hayder in particular, an excellent writer) then this is a good candidate.

The plot is good, and it's great to see the introduction (and exuent) of Eva, Fran's mother. It really has injected something into the series, and is nicely different to much in fiction today.

The writing is lively and fun, and Fran is a very likeable character. The plot is a cracker, at heart a traditional detective story with a nice contemporary twist. However, the only thing which lets it down is the fact that the identity and motivation of the killer struck me as a little unlikely. However, that does not detract from the high-quality of this mystery.

3.0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING, 9 Aug 2001
By A Customer
I HAVE READ ALL OF ANN GRANGER'S MYSTERY BOOKS. THIS FRAN VARADY MYSTERY WAS A DISAPPOINTMENT. THE CHARACTERS WERE NOT WELL DEVELOPED. I AM TIRED ABOUT HEARING THAT NOTHING EVER GOES RIGHT FOR FRAN. CAN WE GIVE HER A BREAK HERE? THE STORY LINES JUMPED AND THE BOOK TOOK FOREVER TO READ. PLEASE GIVE US A GOOD MEREDITH AND MARKBY NOVEL TO MAKE UP FOR THIS DISAPPOINTMENT.
