Review
What a joy to dip into this collection knowing that each story is original and published here for the first time. As more and more readers find historical crime fiction to their taste, the demand is being satisfied by some excellent writers. In his third anthology Jakubowski has gathered an impressive array of talent from authors whose historical mysteries are very well known, like June Thomson and Peter Lovesey, to those setting their crime story for the first time in a past century. And past really does mean past; the stories, which are arranged chronologically, begin with Amy Myers's 'Who Killed Dido?', set in Carthage, 10th century BC, and end with Lauren Henderson's 'Dark Mirror', based on the 1941 film of the same name. There is a similar variety to be found in style and setting, from the tongue-in-cheek to the traditional; from the Orkneys in 999AD to a gentleman whose plan is to carry out the perfect murder while travelling to America on the Titanic. All lovers of the genre will find a story that reflects their particular interest. The sleuths are eagle-eyed, the plots ingenious and the twists at the end almost always surprising. (Kirkus UK)
