Product Description

Product Description

Writer Kate Ivory has new neighbours on either side of her terraced house. On one side lives Jeremy Wells, a diffident, charming Oxford academic. On the other live Laura and Edward Foster who are intent on enjoying every moment of their retirement. None of them seems likely to become embroiled in serious crime, nor to be its victim. But within a few weeks, Kate is answering questions by the police about a brutal murder on her own doorstep.

About the Author

Veronica Stallwood was born in London, educated abroad and now lives near Oxford. In the past she has worked at the Bodleian Library and more recently in Lincoln College library. When she is not writing, Veronica Stallwood enjoys going for long walks, talking and eating with friends, and gazing out at the peaceful Oxfordshire countryside from the windows of her cottage.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting plot, but could have been much better developed, 4 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Oxford Double (Paperback)
As with most of Veronica Stallwood's novels, Oxford Double is light and easy to read. The plot centres around the introduction of the euro on 1st January 2002, and as such, it might have been more timely if the book had appeared in print a few months ago. That said, the idea is interesting, but poorly developed. As with earlier novels, it is only through extensive use of coincidence and the somewhat unlikely and eccentric behaviour of supporting characters that Kate Ivory is able to solve the mystery without either being murdered or involving police interest much earlier.

Kate herself continues to be a contradiction between an apparently intelligent women and a total incompetent (especially when it comes to basic understanding of word processing) which I found disappointing and frustrating, given that she is a professional author.

In summary, an easy book to read in a couple of hours to pass the time, but not really a riveting read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kept my attention throughout, 11 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Never having read Ms Stallwood before, I was delighted to find a good read in Oxford Double. There is nothing very striking about this book but it was a pleasure to escape into Lucy's world and avoid 'bad' language and follow a very feasible criminal plot. For a light, easy and plausible read I'd recommend Ms Stallwood.
