Product Description
Libertus finds himself in Londinium at the invitation of the Roman Governor when news arrives of the brutal murder of Caius Monnius, the chief corn-officer. Libertus is asked to investigate but his enquiries lead him in disparate directions. Who is the guilty one? The keeper of the granaries? The sinister Calyx and Glaucus, managers of the best chariotracing team? Or Fortunatus, the handsome charioteer whose relations with the dead man's wife were reputed to be less than honourable? Not until Libertus finds a second corpse does he begin to understand what lies behind the corruption surrounding the interests of Monnius and the chariots of Calyx.

4.0 out of 5 stars Latest instalment of Libertus's travels doesn't disappoint, 12 April 2002
By A Customer
Having read and enjoyed Rosemary Rowe's previous novels about Libertus, the freedman Celtic pavement maker, it comes as no surprise to find him once more following the whims of his patron Marcus and this time in Londinium. Once again, though, this is somewhat against his inclination - Libertus is once again searching for his long-lost wife, whom he had believed to be in Londinium, but at the end of the previous novel was devastated to see being shipped elsewhere. The personal dynamics of this novel therefore centre round Libertus' struggle to conceal his disinclination for the favour that he has been granted, together with an exploration of his increasingly affectionate quasi-paternal relationship with his own slave. The story is interesting enough, with convincing domestic detail and a sidelight onto chariot racing, although the plot concerning corruption and intrigue in the racing and grain businesses sometimes seems a bit thin and overstretched. The ending, too, has a twist that comes with something of a bump. However, it's still an enjoyable read with lots of authentic Roman detail - good value for Libertus fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars an entertaining read, 24 April 2002
By A Customer
For me, the one best Libertus stories yet. I found the parallels between the Roman world and the modern one as intriguing as ever, especially the insights into corruption in high places. I didn't guess the answer either, though I thought I had!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Addition to a First Rate Series of Books, 13 Feb 2007
By J. Chippindale (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Rosemary Rowe is the pseudonym of Rosemary Aitken, a highly qualified academic, who has written more than half a dozen bestselling textbooks on English Language and communication. She has written fiction for many years under her married name.

Libertus, one time slave and now Pavement Maker and citizen of Rome, is asked to investigate the brutal and untimely murder of Caius Monnius, Londinium's chief corn-officer. His enquiries lead him in many directions, until he feels he may well be going round in circles. Was it the keeper of the granaries who performed the brutal killing? The sinister pair Calyx and Glaucus, manager's of a chariot team are also suspects. Or could it be Fortunatus, the lover of Caius' wife?
