Product Description

Ginny Porter and Joan Flynn were born within days of each other in adjoining houses in a narrow street of two-up two-downs in Liverpool. They’ve been friends since they were toddlers and now they’ve become young ladies and left school. Joan finds work at Dunlop’s tyre factory, while Ginny’s dream comes true when she is taken on as a counter assistant at Woolworths. But things don’t work out as she had expected, and she carries around a dark secret...

5.0 out of 5 stars Brings tears to your eyes..., 16 Dec 2002
Whether in laughter, or sadness, this book had me crying all the way through. There's something about Joan Jonker's style that really appeals to me, maybe it's the way this book will appeal to everyone, or just the way the characters are so beautifully brought to life... Whichever, this book carries on the Joan tradition of writing that draws you in gently, until you can't put the book down, but have to know what happens next.
The story is based on family life, and focuses on every member of the family in a way that is warm and honest. I find myself laughing at almost every chapter, as all the characters are humourous, be it directly, or indirectly.
If you liked, well, I don't think anyone likes, they all love, Joan's previous work, then this book will not disappoint. And if you haven't read any of her sagas, then START NOW! She became my favourite author after reading only two of her books, and I promise that even if you haven't read her before, if you like family based books, Joan will eventually become one of your favourite authors too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great family saga from a fantastic writer, 29 May 2002

Yet again Joan was right about needing a half box of kleenex!! Not just for the crying but for the laughing so much :-) I love all her books and her characters are so real and the stories totally enthralling. I am always on pins for the next one to come out :-)
This book bring to life another street with wonderful friends and neighbours and makes one want to go back to those times - they may have been hard work but the love for the families and their friends was always there.
Well done again Joan for making us laugh and cry at the same time :-)

I thought Joan had excelled herself yet again. The story was touching and hilarious. Couldn't put it down I read the book in 2 days. I have bought every single book that Joan has ever wrote and will continue to do so. Keep up the good work Joan.
