Review
'Erian is a very gifted writer indeed... These addictively dark tales are very reminiscent of Milan Kundera's 1968 short story collection, Laughable Loves. Above all, they linger in the mind' -- The List 20020214 'Very readable' -- The Big Issue 20020218 'Extremely interesting... Erian's writing is bold, visceral, fierce and flamboyant' -- Yorkshire Evening Press 20020313 "A revelation. Rude, unusual and extremely funny' -- Ms London 20020408 'Funny, provocative and sometimes plain rude, this is a book not to be missed' -- Wiltshire Times 20020301

Product Description
Alicia Erian's deliciously grown-up debut may not be a book for nice girls, but it has a lot to teach us about the unruly nature of desire. A college-bound student plots to lose her virginity to a pizza waiter, a spelling champion spends her afternoons in the bath with the classroom bully and a newlywed finds herself strangely drawn to her husband's father. Bold, achingly funny and never less than heartfelt, these are stories about women who dare to grasp at experience in the knowledge that they may live to regret it. The Brutal Language of Love announces the arrival of a true and highly original voice in American fiction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stories to warm the heart, 1 Jun 2001
By A Customer
Alicia Erian's book is a little marvel. Her stories are deceptively direction-less and instead meander around the warm fuzzy spaces of the human heart. They have a gently comic tone and many laugh-out-loud moments, but Erian is always precise in her use of language, and her characters are full and vivid. The best story is "Bikini", in which the protagonist is convinced she is a lesbian because she likes trying on bras. There are slivers of darkness creeping throughout the book, but the stories are so damned funny and plucky that the overall effect is of sipping a glass of peach schnapps and lemonade on a sunny day in the garden.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stories about strange situations, 30 Jul 2001
By A Customer
The good thing about short story collections is that you can hate one story, and quite easily like the next one. I wouldn't say I hated any of the nine stories in this book, but I felt like it started well, but ended rather weakly. I didn't really like the last story or two - apart from that, I thought it was great. Unusual, thought-provoking stories about normal people in strange situations, and funny with it. My favourite stories were Alcatraz (the fat girl in the bath with the school bully), the woman who thought she was a lesbian after being fitted for a bra, and the girl who wanted to lose her virginity to the pizza waiter (can't remember the names of those stories!).

4.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming, shocking and yet funny., 15 May 2006
By Pulcheria (London, UK) - See all my reviews
I truely enjoyed reading this book. Cover to cover it took me four hours. I was touched by the voice of the narrator, Jasira, who is startlingly precocious, and yet, at only 13, is of course touchingly naive. More shocking is the casual brutality of her father, and the self-centeredness of her mother. With such appalling and selfish parents, Jasira's skewed morality is easy to understand. But what shocked me the most was the jacket description of this as a 'sexy' book by three reviewers, including the New York Times and Scotland on Sunday. This is a book about sexuality, but anyone who thinks that a thirteen year old being sexually abused by an adult is 'sexy' needs to profoundly reassess their attitudes towards both sex and children.
That point aside, despite the subject matter this is actually a warm story. I laughed out loud at the part where Jasira and her friend make up the horoscopes for the school paper. Despite the obstacles it manages to finish with a plausible optimistic ending. I would thoroughtly recommend this book.
