Product Description

When her brother arrives on her doorstep, Hester Monk is shocked – as much by the unexpectedness of the visit as by the reason for it. For since her marriage to Monk, Charles and his elegant wife, Imogen, have kept their distance. But now Charles needs Hester’s help. He believes Imogen is having an affair - there can be no other explanation for her recent strange behaviour. However, before Hester is able to investigate, a tragedy occurs. In a nearby artist’s studio two women have been brutally killed. Having left the police force with extreme ill feeling between himself and his superior, the last thing Monk wants to do is face the demons of his past. But, in the course of his work, Monk is left with no choice but to visit his old adversary, Runcorn, and involve himself with the sensational murder case.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Plot and Murder Investigation, 25 Jan 2005
By Professor Donald Mitchell "Jesus Makes Me a P... (Boston) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
The strength of the Anne Perry books about William Monk and his nurse wife, Hester, is in describing the nitty-gritty of ordinary life in Victorian London. In Funeral in Blue, Ms. Perry extends her talents to do the same for Vienna. As a result, the book's best moments are those exploring the passions and conflicts of the unsuccessful revolution there in 1848.

Unfortunately, Ms. Perry overreaches herself in dragging those momentous events into the story. The rest of the plot also seems contrived and moves oh so slowly. Despite enough red herrings to fill a pickle barrel, it's very obvious to any reader who the murderer was except to the fictional characters who are investigating the murder. As a result, the angst that William and Hester go through is simply painful to read.

I read this book after enjoying The Shifting Tide. If you decide to read one of the novels in the series, I strongly suggest that you read The Shifting Tide instead. It's vastly more interesting, fast moving and well constructed than this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great but..., 1 Oct 2002
Anne Perry's books are always interesting and I love each and every one fo them. This one is particularly interesting because the dead is one of the best characters in the book which is unusual and makes you think about life and passion and honour and death.
Unfortunately, as it has prove in other books, this one has discrepancies. Monk is referred to as never having visited Dr. Beck but he has in "A Sudden and Fearful Death", he was haunted by Imogen's face in the first books and here he hardly recognizes her, Callandra Daviot does not go to the funeral meal at Mr. Pendregh`s house but later on it is said she hadn't noticed the decoration of the house. The same has happened before (Hester dead brother is James and then George, major Tiplady is Hercules and then Horatio, in "Slaves and Obsession" the ending leaves too many questions unanswered.
I hope Anne Perry will redeem herself because in this kind of book precision is an art but also a necessity.
Anyway, I strongly recommend all her books for their portrayal of Victorian society and also for her portraits of intelligent and passionate women in a world where they are not welcome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable mystery ., 26 Jan 2002
By A Customer
I have read all of Anne Perry's books to date and this one is as enjoyable as any of the Monk series. The mystery appears unsolveable to the end of course and there is a dramatic denouement with the inclusion of an unlikely ally.

However for me the true enjoyment came from the character development. It is most engaging as the principal character (Monk) is forced to reconsider old prejudices of his own and national prejudices. At looking at both he is forced to change his original opinion of an old enemy.

I highly recommend this book.
