5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly entertaining mystery, 26 Oct 2000
By Ms. E. Hayes (Leicestershie) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
When Michelle Lunt is found hanging from a light fitting in a flat off Liverpool's Sefton Park, Landlord, DJ and part-time PI Johnny Ace is concerned, but has no suspicion of the life- threatening chain of events about to unfold before him.

The police investigation is cursory, as suicide seems the obvious explanation, until that is Johnny receives a call from Michelle's sister Linda Roberts, who has never heard of Michelle's husband Wilbur Lunt. Indeed she did not know that Michelle was married.. To clarify a few points Johnny attempts to contact Wilbur, but Wilbur has disappeared. All contacts for Wilbur lead to a dead end. Intrigued, but not overly concerned Johnny sets out to discover what caused Michelle to take her own life. But did she?

Whilst pursuing his enquires, Linda stays over at Johnny's flat. Well his long-time girl friend Hilary is away!, but Maria is not!

Suddenly, Johnny is arrested for receiving stolen goods, and is on the run. Maria won't speak to him, his witnesses have all disappeared, but gradually, one, by one, turn up, dead!

This was one terrific read, the pace was fast and fun and full of throw-away remarks that had be laughing out-loud. I particularly enjoyed the reference to his rival for his spot on the radio station, Shady Spencer, thinking that Max Bygraves was the cutting edge of Rock'n'Roll!. It conjured up an immediate picture of Shady Spencer. The vivid descriptions of Liverpool provide a wonderful background to this intriguing mystery, where all lines of enquiry seem to lead nowhere. Along the way, Johnny acquires Roly, the dog with a smile. Roly has a character all of his own, that is a delight, except that he sleeps through the Archers!.

A thoroughly entertaining mystery. There are two earlier books in the series. Ears of the City and Mean Streets. I aim to read both. Also look out for the next Johnny Ace mystery 'The Singing Dead'. ----- Lizzie Hayes 25 October 2000
