5.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric, absorbing and original detective fiction, 5 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Barbara Nadel's third mystery with Inspector Ikmen,'the witch's son', does not disappoint - it's her best yet, written with wit and style. Her plotting and characterisation are as sharp and original as ever. Tansu, the passionate Arabesk singer around whom mystery and drama crackle, and her entourage are vividly drawn and the unfolding human tragedy surrounding a woman's mysterious death and the disppearance of her child is an expert mixture of suspense and entertaining narrative.
Her regular characters, including the handsome and aristocratic Suleyman (now promoted to inspector), and Ikmen's own huge family are further developed, drawing the reader deeper into their lives. Ancient mysteries and prejudices challenge the detectives and those closest to them in unexpected and life-changing ways and Nadel allows us to understand and care about the people she writes about.
Barbara Nadel's greatest achievements are the creation of Inspector Cetin Ikmen and her evocation of Istanbul. In Ikmen, a truly original, fascinating and entertaining detective has been born. In Istanbul, a city and its crowded streets and ancient cultures come vividly alive - colours, sounds, smells, heat and dust lifting from the page. Exotic and eye opening stuff!
I can't wait to read Nadel's next Ikmen mystery to see where she takes her characters next - she just gets better and better.

2.0 out of 5 stars not up to scratch, 11 April 2001
By Jacqueline A. Millman "jackiem" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Arabesk (Hardcover)
Despite having adored Nadel's last two books this plot did not grab me at all and I had to struggle to finish it.Perhaps the problem lay in the fact that The chief investigator was not the colourful and engaging Ikmen who was on sick leave but his sidekick Suleyman who does not have the charisma of the older man. The sense of place a la Donna Leon is still there but I did not care enough about the characters to wonder 'whodunnit'. I will buy Ms Nadel's next book because i am sure Ikmen will be back next time around
