5.0 out of 5 stars A great new detective novelist, 3 May 2000
By A Customer
It is the characterisation that really makes this book so good. Ikmen and Suleyman come to life as the novel progresses and we learn a little more about each man. By the end, we care about each of them and their lives. The mystery itself was very clever, with various red herrings although the answer - not the identity of the murderer - but the background to the crime - came to me like a thunderbolt about half way through. For anyone who knows something about the historical background to this novel -as I do - the clues are all there, and one paragraph gave it away to me. However, anyone who does not have this historical knowledge will almost certainly be guessing right to the end.

I can't wait to read her next novel.

3.0 out of 5 stars A poor ending mars this, 3 Feb 2008
An interesting setting, an interesting detective but a rather poor ending. We're taken to explore modern day Istanbul and all its vices with our chain smoking detective who `throws' cigarettes into his mouth with such monotonous regularity one almost wonders about product placement. The story starts of well, there is a murder and the Armenian detective starts the investigation. None of the unnecessary violence that litters many of today's detective novels, this is good old fashioned detective work, which whilst perhaps not quite in the Sherlock Holmes category is pleasing to watch nonetheless. All this is marred by an incredibly bad ending, it's almost as if the author realised she didn't know how to pull the story together and contrived some unbelievable tale of incest, a forgotten but identical twin and a dash of paedophile. It's all rather a shame as it spoilt what was otherwise a very good book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Start, 18 Oct 2006
By Red Kell (Merseyside , UK) - See all my reviews
The main plus points of this novel are the characters Barbara Nadal has created. The plot is unusual and keeps the reader intrigued but it is the main players in the story that make this book a winner. In Inspectors Cetin Ikmen and Mehmet Suleyman she has created Detectives up there with the best. The descriptions of Istanbul make it a place that you feel you want to know more about.
I had not heared of Barbara Nadal before I read this book but this book had me rushing out looking for more!
