Product Description

Product Description

‘You will be unhappily wed. You will be widowed. You will be Queen.’ To fourteen-year-old Rose, eldest daughter of a poor plantation landlord, the fortune teller’s prophecy is both thrilling and laughable. Poorly educated and without a dowry, it seems unlikely she will find any husband, much less a king. But history tells a different tale. In this beautifully crafted novel, Sandra Gulland pulls back the veil of history to reveal the extraordinary life of the woman who will one day be known as Joséphine Bonaparte, wife of the emperor who will rule all France.

About the Author

A writer and editor, Sandra Gulland was brought up in California and moved to Canada in 1970. She has been at work on the Joséphine novels for many years, travelling extensively to the places where Joséphine lived, learning to speak and read French and corresponding with period scholars. She lives in Ontario with her husband and two children.

3.0 out of 5 stars Deliciously shallow, 23 Sep 2007
By Roman Clodia (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I'm afraid I agree with the reviewer below who calls this history lite - this is romantic and frivolous with the emotional intensity of a bar of chocolate, and just as delicious! Don't go into this expecting anything more and you'll enjoy the book hugely.

Written as Josephine's (Rose) private journal, this whips through the years from her adolescence in Martinique through a failed marriage, motherhood, the French Revolution, imprisonment, re-establishment in society, and marriage to Napoleon in 400 pages, mostly comprising short diary entries. Most characters are familiar stereotypes; people fall in love and out again in the space of a line or two; and nothing causes any real emotion.

This is the perfect bedtime book, lulling you gently into sleep with descriptions of C18th clothes, handsome men, beautiful women and nothing traumatic or too interesting to engage your mind and keep you awake. I can't wait to start the 2nd volume tonight!

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating., 10 May 2000
By A Customer
After a hesitant beginning, I found that I was captivated by the story and was reluctant to put it down. I've learnt more about 'revolutionary France' reading this book, than ever before and I was entertained in the process. I was disappointed when I reached the end but thrilled to discover that it is only the first book in a trilogy. I can't wait for the others!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and personal history of Josephine Bonaparte, 6 Jan 2000
By A Customer
At first glance, I feared an autobiography of a historical person would be dull. Far from it, this book is pacy and deeply involving. It is written in diary form, giving an intimate insight into revolutionary France and a personal view of the younger life of Josephine that is not popularly known about. I couldn't put it down.
