Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
People who live with lies can be killed by the truth. Sheep farmer Eileen knows much of the worst about her husband Scott and has constructed her life to avoid thinking about it. The wedding of her rebellious daughter Moreen is just another small portion of hell--Randy is a smalltown tough with a nasty temper. Then long-lost nephew Neal turns up at the wedding and shortly afterwards people start to die and all the skill at evasion which Eileen has taught herself down the years will not save her.

Kimball's rural America is a nightmare of prejudice, loan-sharking, hideous accidents, ill- advised sexual encounters and gratuitously violent death. His laconic Maine countryfolk keep quiet because they all have secrets; this is a thriller which gains much of its power from the way no-one tells anyone anything. From the moment he appears in a barn to face down Randy and his psychotic friend Gator, Neal combines sexual magnetism, a terrifying lack of fear and a capacity for making himself look good at other people's expense. Mouth to Mouth is an effective novel of suspense because Kimball makes us care about the people to whom terrible things happen, especially the flawed but strong Eileen. --Roz Kaveney, Amazon.co.uk --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mouth to Mouth, 7 May 2006
By Rich Milligan (Thatcham, Berkshire) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Mouth to Mouth (Paperback)
This is the second Michael Kimball novel that I have read and I found this one to be a well-written and well-crafted story. The author takes much care in the slow build up of tension in the storyline and creates and most edgy and atmospheric situation.

Ellen Chambers is a schoolteacher who lives on her sheep farm with husband Scott. All is not well though in Ellen's live as her only child, her daughter Moreen, is marrying a rather scary man, Randy, who when not diving for a living doubles up as the local debt collector, with menaces of course. There is a surprise guest at the wedding though in the shape of Scott's nephew, Neal, who Ellen has not seen for years. After the wedding when Neal volunteers to stay on at the farm and rebuild the couple's barn he is welcomed with open arms by Scott although Ellen is less sure of what she feels for the attractive and very assured Neal.

It's almost impossible to describe any more of the book without giving away too much of the plot but needless to say events on the farm take both tragic and thrilling turns for all members and as it becomes clears that the mysterious Neal is behind a lot of the actions. His hold over Ellen seems to be growing stronger every day and the reader does wonder if she will be strong enough to break free of his grip discover just what is his driving motivation behind it all.

As I say Mr Kimball shows great skill in the way he develops the building tension in the story, the influence the Neal begins to wave over Ellen is believable and credible and he backs this part of the story up with some more exciting passages concerning Randy and his debt collector friend Rooftop.

Where I do have some complaints though is that sometimes the story is build up far too slowly. It's the sort of book you can read for an hour or two and then realise that the actual storyline hasn't moved on at all really, more than once I wanted to give the book a kick up the backside to get things moving.

That's probably a little too harsh though as the book certainly keeps the reader's interest and my fascination with the story never wavered.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best thriller I have read yet!, 26 April 2000
By A Customer
I'm not that accustomed to reading and after reading some of John Grisons books I have found that the thriller genre is definitely what I enjoy. So when I saw this book I was half expecting it to be average but once I picked it up I found I couldn't put it down I read it in 3 sittings and the final hundred pages or so slowed a little but overall a seriously excellent book, the characters are throughly likeable even the bad guys are cool.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent, you'll want to read in one sitting, 21 Mar 2000
A grade 'A' thriller in the best tradition of ' is he or isn't he guilty'. A tight plot with characters well defined. An anxious mother, self reliant in all aspects of her life apart from those involving her rebelious daughter, a husband too wrapped up in his own small world to register what is happening around him. A nephew who may be from hell or the saviour they all need. Michael Kimballs first novel 'Undone' was good but tended to drift away in the middle, this one on the other hand keeps you wanting to turn the pages and holds your attention from page one. Kimball describes scenes like you are there and leaves clues all the way through, if you can only pick up on them. He's not there yet, but Grisham and Connelly should be looking over there shoulders Kimball is on his way
