Amazon.co.uk Review

Years ago, who would have thought that the most powerful computers would one day be household appliances capable of the most technical espionage? With the Internet now providing such possibilities, Tom Clancy, block-busting author of high-tech thrillers, explores this with Net Force. Set in 2010, The Internet has become the planet's central nervous system. This is very appealing for terrorists and in response there is Net Force: highly trained operatives who police the twin worlds of reality and virtual reality. In Hidden Agendas, Louisiana's state capitol building is destroyed using a chemical weapons formula stolen from the Net. The team has to deal with online assaults on the world's banks, murder and possibly the most daring robbery in history. While this series does not have the grand intricacy and epic stance of the Jack Ryan novels, there is no denying that Clancy has a talent for high-tension thrillers and intricate descriptions of high-tech hardware. Obviously aimed at a wider age group, this is an effective thriller with a genuinely interesting premise. Danny Graydon

Product Description

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Dreadful, 26 Feb 2001
By A Customer
This book is not what one expects after reading the previous books. The plot is long, drawn out and predictable and the ending is rushed, obvious and badly written. It also requires the reader to have read the previous books before commencing on this one. In all, quite a let down - if you have a good opinion of Tom Clancy books' then avoid this one!

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but nothing special, 26 Dec 2003

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Net Force is a series of books written by Tom Clancy and Steve Pieczenik about how crime is dealt with in the year 2010 when everything is controlled via the Internet. With the Internet becoming the central nervous system for the entire world, it also becomes the obvious target for terrorism and Net Force is set up to tackle any such attacks.

In Hidden Agendas, a series of seemingly unrelated attacks leaves Net Force scratching their heads. The clues they get give them one conclusion but is that really the truth they are looking for. There’s also a bunch of personal stuff going on which just adds to the problems of a team looking for some quiet over the Christmas and New Year period.

I found this book entertaining, it certainly has plenty to follow during the course of the storyline. However, I did find the basis of the story a little weak instead finding the page-to-page side stories more interesting. In addition the notion of virtual reality being used with Net Force operatives to ride about on horseback to go looking for trouble seemed a little bit too far fetched (even for Clancy).

That said I would recommend this as an entertaining read to either a Clancy fan or anyone who has already read other Net Force books. You don’t really need to have read other Net Force books to follow this, but if you’re looking for a classic Clancy blockbuster, this is not it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book- a must read, 11 Aug 1999
By A Customer
OK if your a Real Tom Clany fan then you will probably find this book hard going, but after saying that I thought this book was exiting in the way that clancy has predicted the future of the internet. Working in this field I find that the ideas behind this book are not unrealistic and I think it is one of the best Internet/VR books I have read in a long time. If you would like a faster pace book but keeping to the same sort of stories try his 'Net Force Explorer' Series. Once again great book if you can understand the technology behind it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing follow up after a very good original
The intrigue and suspence is still there, as one would expect with Tom Clancy's books. I fell it could've been better. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Formulaic, disappointing
This is the first Tom Clancy Net Force book I've read, and it will probably be the last - all far too formulaic and predictable. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight, but entertaining, it was an interesting read.
An interesting book. The hints (many not so subtle !) of sex made this book a little more "adult" than the previous Net Force book. Read more
