5.0 out of 5 stars shows an unusually keen understanding of the period., 12 Jun 2000
By A Customer
One of the elements with which I was most impressed was that the solution to the mystery depended upon contemporary details - it isn't a mystery that simply have the dates changed and be transformed into a 20th century novel A terrific accomplishment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intricate patterns, 15 Nov 2004
By J. Chippindale (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
This review is from: The Germanicus Mosaic (Hardcover)

186 AD, Britain is the northernmost province of the Roman Empire, the British tribes have settled into a peaceful co-existence with the Roman conquerors.

Libertus the main character of the book is a freedman who lives in Glevum, (modern day Gloucester). By trade he is pavement maker or mosaic artist. By inclination he is a sleuth who is usually called upon to help his patron Marcus. A body is found in a nearby villa and is identified as that of a retired centurion. Libertus is called in by his patron to help solve the murder. . . At the same time Libertus is trying to seek out his wife from whom he was separated while he was a slave.
My kind of book, not much more to say.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Falco but..., 11 Oct 2004
This review is from: The Germanicus Mosaic (Hardcover)
Longinus Flavius Libertus is not Marcus Didius Falco but has a softer cynicism and whimsical humour which make him an equally attractive hero. The Libertus series by Rosemary Rowe are entertaining reads with enough twists and doubts to keep even the hardiest crime buff guessing. The settings feel well researched and paint a satisfyingly real picture or Roman Britain. A little slow paced in places but overall worth a try for anyone interested in historical fiction.
