Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In The Horus Killings, Paul Doherty superbly combines the exotic backdrop of ancient Egypt with the classic ingredients of a brilliant crime story.

The year is 1479 BC and having fearlessly led her army to victory in a battle against the Mitanni, Hatusu has won the support of her people. She is set to become the first woman to be Pharaoh of Egypt. However, not all segments of society are keen on this young Queen as their leader. The strongest corner of resistance comes from the high priests, most of whom abhor this break with tradition. While "the royal throne was always the centre of intrigue, jealousy and bitter rivalry", the plot takes a more sinister turn when the priests begin to be murdered one by one.

Enter Amerotke, Chief Judge of Thebes and Lord President of the Courts of Egypt. He is charged with the job of unravelling the mysteries of the murders while keeping himself alive. This proves to be a difficult task given that he is a supporter of Hatusu and has just sentenced to death a member of the Amemets Guild, who swear revenge on their enemies--not to mention the man-eating lions and the crocodile-infested Nile.

Doherty transports us back in time to a world of oiled bodies, kohl-lined eyes, white-fringed robes and decadent jewellery; a description so vivid that you can feel the heat and smell the incense. --Neelam Dongha --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

After the death of her husband Pharoh Tuthmosis II, Hatusu has confounded her critics by winning a great battle against the Mitanni. Aided by her lover, Senenmut, she is determined that all sections of Egyptian society should accept her as the first Pharaoh-Queen of Egypt - an acceptance that needs the favour and support of the priests. When a spate of killings takes place in the Divine Temple of Horus, the naturally superstitious priests interpret this as a sign of the Gods’ disapproval of Hatusu’s rule of Egypt. The royal city turns once again to respected judge Amerotke to find the truth.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very entertaining Egyptian murder mystery..., 15 Sep 2002
When a spate of murders occur at the Temple of Horus, Queen Hatusu's Chief Judge in the Hall of Two Truths Amerotke is called to investigate...

The plot is engrossing, and the murderer, unlike many murder mysteries, is not obvious, making their revelation at the end of the book a satisfying conclusion to a very entertaining story.

Whilst the murders are a little melodramatic and contrived at times, what really makes this book is Paul Doherty's attention to historical detail, and his grasp of ettiquete and customs of Ancient Egypt and hang of the cutthroat world of Egyptian court politics.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping read, 8 Nov 1999
This review is from: The Horus Killings (Paperback)
This is the second of two books to focus on ancient egypt. The detail is good - and mostly accurate (always a good sign!). Doherty has made his main characters three dimensional and believable. This was a compelling book, and I found that I just couldn't put it down. It is as good as the first book, and I highly recommend both, for fans of both detective fiction, and those interested in ancient Egypt, and for everyone else who likes a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Second Book in the Series, 15 Nov 2006

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Paul Doherty is the consummate professional when it comes to writing historical mystery novels. I for one do not know how he can be so prolific with his offering of books and yet make sure that each of them is well researched. Whether they be 13th, 14th, or fifteenth century they are always true to the period. He has also written books about Alexander the Great and is now turning his hand to novels of Ancient Egypt at the time of the most influential period in its long history.

When Pharaoh Tuthmosis II fell dead before Amun, the sun god, the land of Egypt was thrown into chaos. It's close neighbours looked hungrily at the land that was like a ship without a sail, moving one way and then another, with no guiding hand to steer a straight course.

The land of Egypt is shortly to have its first ever Pharaoh-Queen, but first she and her close advisor must solve a spate of murders that is threatening to jeopardise her claim to the throne . . .
