4.0 out of 5 stars A really gripping mystery set in 18th century London, 29 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Robert Fairfax, in reduced circumstances, is tutor to the hot-tempered Matthew. When Lucy Dove, a young actress with whom Matthew had fallen in love, is found murdered, Matthew is the chief suspect, and Fairfax has to prove his innocence. This is a real page-turner, and for once I didn't guess the identity of the murderer until the end. There is a lot of very convincing detail about 18th century London, and the story flows so well, and the characters are so real, that it doesn't seem like a first novel - is 'Hannah March' a pseudonym? Whoever she (or he) is, it's a very good book.
