5.0 out of 5 stars Clever and convincing follow-up to an old favourite., 11 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Anyone who loved Erskine Childers "Riddle of the Sands" will read this with delight because it picks up the story where Childers left it and runs with it. What is especially clever is that it brings in fresh and utterly characters in the centre of the story to take the narrative forward but gives you just enough of Childers' own characters and story to satisfy. right up to the last minute you're left guessing at how it can possibly end. Sam Llewellyn writes brilliantly about the sea.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, 22 Jul 2004
Having thoroughly enjoyed The Riddle of the Sands, I was curious to see how a modern day sequel would develop, and initially I enjoyed it. The characters are a good blend of old and new and the plot is a good continuation of the original story line. However, having finished it I don't think I will ever read it again as the ending is awful. I don't want to ruin it for those who haven't read it but I can't think of an ending which makes the main character's role seem so utterly pointless. In addition, I found the authors attempt at redressing social injustice from a period 100 years ago a consistent annoyance and, in the end, laughable.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read., 19 Feb 1999
By A Customer
Remarkably true,I thought, to the spirit of Riddle of the Sands and quite convincing to start with. Credibility stretched as the story progresses. Norfolk dialect well presented. Nautical aspects authentic - explanations for non-sailors generally clear and not patronising. As the climax approaches the action becomes unconvincing and confused. Nevertheless very enjoyable overall.

3.0 out of 5 stars Highly readable, one of Llewellin's best books
Meant to be a homage and a follow-up to Erskine Childers' Riddle of the Sands, the book manages to keep its promise to a certain extent. Read more
