Product Description

Product Description

Dr Nina Crawford of the University of Glasgow's Vet School - driven, fanatically dedicated, a survivor - is one of the most respected animal surgeons in the country. But now she seems to be losing her grip. On her operating theatre, on her skills - and on her mind. After routine operations, horses are dying of the highly infectious E. Coli endotoxaemia, and even when the theatre is sterilised the outbreak isn't stemmed. Under the fierce scrutiny of those around her Nina feels herself spiralling into the depths that led her, years before, to attempt suicide. Kellen Stewart, heroine of Manda Scott's astonishing debut novel Hen's Teeth, is Nina's friend and therapist. Now her horse needs emergency surgery, and she is catapulted into Nina's tragic dilemma. And soon it becomes clear that not only horses' lives are on the line...

About the Author

Manda Scott is a veterinary surgeon, writer and climber, not necessarily in that order. Born and educated in Scotland, she trained at the Glasgow Vet School and now lives in Suffolk, sharing her life with a lurcher and other assorted wildlife. Her first novel, HEN'S TEETH, hailed by Fay Weldon as 'a new voice for a new world', won widespread critical acclaim and was shortlisted for the 1997 Orange Prize.

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely briliant!, 12 Sep 2000

Dr Kellen stewart excels herself once again in the fight for the life of her horses and her patient/lover Dr Nina Crawford. Ms Scott's medical knowledge is extremely accurate and her writing skills marvellous to provide the reader with most wonderful novel!

3.0 out of 5 stars pony trekking this is not, 12 Sep 2008

This review is from: Night Mares (Paperback)
I was attracted to this series as I had read Scotts No Good Deed, a brilliant book. I then realised that she wrote the totally absorbing Boudica series. That said, the historical series is vastly better than this her gay therapist set, all of which were infinitely less good than NGD.
Obviously climbing is important to the writer and it is here, in a lot of detail, in the books. Kellen, the main character - who doesn't really climb - seems to be totally obsessed with Lee her good friend - who does a lot of climbing - and the one she is rescuing again in this book. (You ask yourself, why?)
I wanted to like this set, and the dogs and the local detective almost made up for the above, but unlike her other writing I am not convinced by the secretive, controlling nature of the 'friendships' at the centre of the series and dissapointed that Kellen didn't make me want to be her as did Orla and Boudica!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great plot, but constantly-angry characters
I liked this book at first, but found myself getting annoyed with the fact that the only way these characters seem to interact is in anger. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars A real disappointment after her excellent first book
"Hen's Teeth", Manda Scott's first book, was a little heavy on drama and way-out science but the writing managed to carry this along. Read more
