2.0 out of 5 stars Find another biography to discover the Real James Herriot!, 6 Oct 2003
By panda_kfn "kfn1502" (Reading, Berks) - See all my reviews
Graham Lord begins his biography stating how grateful Alf Wight (aka James Herriot) remained all his life for Lord's review of the second Herriot book way back in 1972. Apparently, it was this review which set the Herriot books on their road to success, and Alf never forgot what he owed to Lord for this. Unfortunately, Grahm Lord then proceeds to repay Alf's gratitude by making a series of allegations which subtley denigrate the life and work of Alf Wight. Although it is full of anecdotal evidence from those who knew him (however loosely), conspicuous by its absence is any direct information from the family of Alf Wight - his widow Joan, or children Jim and Rosie. The first several chapters are a long, drawn-out bundle of supposition, based on some factual evidence. Sadly, the hard facts available to a researcher only provide so much of the story, and Lord resorts to filling in the gaps with his own opinion of what MIGHT have occurred. Other parts of the book analyse Alf's life on the basis of other people's opinions, not always totally complimentary! I finished this book feeling very disappointed. It seemed as if all I've ever believed about 'James Herriot' was based on half truths, even lies. Happily, Lord mentions that Jim Wight (Alf's son) was planning to write a biography of his father. For me, this was the best part of Graham Lord's book as I found, and read, a much more believable (and easier to read) version of the real James Herriot.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother, 12 Feb 2008

I read this book on it's first release and felt a growing anger with every page. The author seems only intent on proving how much 'fantasy' was involved in the Herriot books and spends too much energy trying to prove this against that. In all Lord just takes a very long time to get to his point of saying that Alf Wight was dishonest in his writings.
I was very disappointed with this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful debunking, 15 May 2000
By David Null "Emeritus Professor, Cal Poly Univ... (California and London) - See all my reviews

All who have loved a companion animal have enjoyed the charming stories of James Herriot through his many books and the long-lived television series. This book serves as a useful correction sometimes to the sometimes saccharine adoration that has resulted. It presents Herriot as an individual rather than a cultural icon and reminds us that Herriot considered his books to be fiction. The book ends with the observation that Herriot left NONE of his substantial fortune to animal charities, NONE. Conclusion: Herroit was a good vet, a good writer, but like most of us, not a saint.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting and revealing read
The first chapter was a little slow, focusing mainly on the Sunderland area, rather than James Herriot himself. After that, however, I found it hard to put the book down. Read more
