2.0 out of 5 stars Nighttime for Sandford, 9 Jun 2004
By J. Cronin "dudara" (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The novel opens as Anna Battory and her news crew race to a lab where animal activists have released lab animals. While there, they hear of a jumper, or a young man about to commit suicide. These happenings spark off a chain of events that include murder, stalking and a not very good novel.

The author writes from the female perspective of Battory, and never achieves a believable character as a result. As the killer murders any males he believes that Anna has been in contact with, I was frankly left wondering what was so special about this woman. Tension never builds in the novel, and even at the grand finale, you're left emotionally unperturbed.

A poor novel and a poor read.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Crewl World we Live In, 7 Oct 2009

This review is from: The Night Crew (Paperback)
I am a long time fan of John Sandford's `Prey' novels, but have recently caught up with the current books. With this in mind I decided to go back into the author's catalogue and try some of his other novels. `The Night Crew' follows intrepid late night freelance reporter Amy as she becomes the target for a dangerous stalker. Not a woman to lie down she decides to track down the stalker (who turns into a killer) herself in the hope of not being their next victim. The book follows the same methodology of the `Prey' novels and integrates the storylines of both the killer and the victim from their own points of view. The best parts of the book are when a chapter ends with the killer about to attack. The next chapter will then be from the PoV of the victim slowly walking into a trap; this was a very effective way of increasing tension.

By using the same technique in both `Night Crew' and the `Prey' novels Sandford is asking for them to be compared and it is here that `Night Crew' falls down. The story is still as tense as the `Prey' books and the structure holds up; it is the characters that suffer. Amy is not as well rounded as Lucas Davenport has become and I feel that a maverick cop has a lot more right to get involved in a case than a nosy reporter. The fact that Amy is ballsy is not an issue; just that she thinks she can do what she wants with no thought for the law. In Davenport it makes sense as he can bring someone to justice, with Amy all she can do is discover them. As a standalone book it is reasonable, but when compared to the best work of John Sandford is feels distinctly average.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Average, 10 April 2000
By A Customer
This book's greatest virtue is its pace. You are very keen, virtually from page one, to find out what is going on.

The plot and the writing are unexceptional, however, and I did expect far more. In the end, I found the story-line to be quite mundane.

Unnecessary typos don't help a cause either, in my view.

This is not a book to jump over the moon about, but it is one which is good airport and airplane material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrill ride of a who done it!
Excellent pace. Doesn't stop with twists and turns. Nice to see a change from the Lucas Davenport trend. Refreshingly original.
