3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining start for Doctor Forman, 10 Nov 2000
By A Customer
I quite enjoyed the first book in this series, and warmed quite quickly to the central character, the Elizabethan doctor, Simon Forman. The body of a young woman is hauled out of the Thames one murky morning and Forman is not convinced by the apparent suicide... It turns out to be quite an interesting mystery and Forman is a sufficiently charismatic 'hero' to sustain interest, even when the plot slows down a little. Elizabethan London is recreated satisfactorily, although I never quite felt 'transported to another age' for some reason. Sometimes the characters seem to belong more to the modern day than to the late sixteenth century, but perhaps that's a little harsh. The author certainly whips up some atmosphere as the tale reaches its climax and on the whole this debut augurs well for the rest of the series.
