Product Description

Product Description

A busy night in a fashionable restaurant. Minutes later, carnage. 13 people dead and dozens wounded. As Lieutenant Decker, in charge of the police on the scene says, it’s your worst nightmare. But at least the culprit seems clear - an embittered ex-employee, Harlan Manz, who ambled up to the bar and opened fire, finally turning the gun on himself. But why did Manz do it? Deck finds that things don’t quite add up. Then he questions Jeanine Garrison, daughter of millionaire parents killed in the outrage, and find himself slapped with a sexual harassment suit. Now Decker knows she’s involved, and after her brother, who shared the inheritance, is found dead he's sure. But he’s not allowed near the woman. Meantime, he can feel her slipping through his fingers and getting away, quite literally, with murder.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than average, but..., 17 Feb 1999
By A Customer
OK, I'm a fan, but I have to admit that Faye Kellerman can be guilty of treading the same path repeatedly. Peter Decker is a superbly drawn character, if a little messianic in his rediscovery of faith and his endurance of suffering. Not too good to be true, but certainly there are one or two moments when the suspension of disbelief is essential. The plot here is Biblical in theme, complete with a massacre, (v. Old Testament), sundry wickedness, familial disloyalty, and opportunities for redemption through loyalty for Decker's extended family and his tribe of followers, friends and colleagues. The trick that Kellerman holds together is to make her theme relevant and realistic. What distracted me was the way that some themes were opened and then abandoned, as if Kellerman can't quite round the whole story up in time for the conclusion. (It's not a spoiler if I ask what was the relevance of Rina doing the books for the yeshiva ? There's plenty enough evidence for her independence and talent anyway. If she's needed to help inspire Decker, why can't he just ask her straight out, or why can't she just volunteer an opinion ? Or have I missed a trick here ?) Anyway, the long and the short is that this is better than ninety percent of the landfill in waiting that gets published, but it's not as good as Kellerman can manage on top form.
