Product Description

Product Description

Spring 1523. Benjamin Daunbey and his rapscallion servant, Roger Shallot, are summoned to London. A Florentine envoy, Lord Francesco Abrizzi, has been murdered and King Henry is determined to unmask the perpetrators of this outrage. In London, Shallot experiences King Henry’s rage, the insults of the Abrizzis and a murderous attack. Shallot, a born coward, wants to crawl away and hide, but the King and Wolsey insist that he and Benjamin go to Florence, find Abrizzi’s assassin, deliver a secret message, and bring back a Florentine painter. It sounds simple enough – but the reality is murderously different.

4.0 out of 5 stars Meet a lovable rogue, 20 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This author is a master at writing the mediaeval thriller and creating the historical sleuth. Michael Clynes is a pseudonym for Paul Doherty who introduced us to brother Athelstan crime-solver during the time of John of Gaunt, and Sir Hugh Corbett likewise for Edward I. Roger Shallot is part of a team who do the same for Henry VIII. It is the anti-hero character of Shallot that makes these books so successful and readable. He is dictating his adventures to his clerk when he is in his nineties, long after the events have taken place. Suffice it to say in this book Shallot and his master, Benjamin Daunbey, are ordered to find the killer of a guest of the king's, who hails from Florence. The search takes the pair to Florence with the family of the murdered man, all of whom seem perfect suspects.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read, 31 Jan 2005

This review is from: A Brood of Vipers (Hardcover)
The spring of 1523 and Benjamin Daunbey, nephew of Cardinal Wolsey and his servant Roger Shallot are summoned from Ipswich to London.
Lord Francesco Abrizzi, a Florentine envoy has been murdered in Cheapside. He has been shot in the head by one of the new firearms. King Henry is determined to unmask the killer.

During their travel to London Benjamin and Roger are to collect the King's old physician, who has also been summoned by Henry. When they arrive at his house he is found dead in his bath with his wrists cut, apparently having committed suicide.

Benjamin and Roger are told by Wolsey they must go to Florence with the dead man's family to discover the identity of the killer.

It seems to be a routine case for them, but murder and mayhem await them in Italy. Will they ever see England again?

Once again Paul Doherty weaves a tangled web of murder and intrigue. He is certainly one of the best at this type of book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Trip to Florence, 24 Jan 2005
By J. Chippindale (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Paul Doherty seems to be able to turn his hand to virtually any century in history. With these novels he has stepped forward a pace in time to the Tudor period from his usual offerings in the 14th century, but still seems able to capture the feeling for the period in history that he is currently writing about. As far as historical mysteries go, he is the consummate professional.

King Henry VIII is not a particularly forgiving man and the people who surround him, or work for him are constantly walking a tightrope. They are very much aware that one slight mistake could well mean at least on part of their body hitting the ground as it is separated from the rest of their body.

Roger Shallot and Benjamin Daunbey have done service for the King on more than one occasion and when they are summoned to London, they are well aware that Henry has another mission for them and one that they must solve if they valued their futures. A Florentine envoy has been murdered and King Henry is well aware that the death will reflect bacdly upon him unless he can find the reason for it and the assassin who did the deed..

To discover the identity of the killer Roger and Benjamin must travel to Florence with the dead man's family. What seems particularly strange is that all of them seem perfectly capable of having committed the murder.
