Product Description

Product Description

He is not going to die, after all, in this Victorian pesthouse called a hospital. But the accident that felled him on a London street has left him with only half a life, because his memory and his entire past have vanished. His name, they tell him, is William Monk, and he is a London police detective; the mirror reflects a face that women woud like, but he senses he has been more feared than loved.
Monk is given a particularly sensational case: the brutal murder of Major the Honourable Joscelin Grey, Crimean war hero and a popular man about town, in his rooms in fashionable Mecklenburgh Square. It's an assignment to make or break an investigator, for the exalted status of the victim puts any representative of the police in the precarious position of having to pry into a noble family's secrets.
Suggesting that his superior, the wily Runcorn, hopes he will fail, Monk returns to a world where he cannot distinguish friend from foe. Grasping desperately for any clue to his own past and to the identity of the killer, each new revelation leads Monk step by terrifying step to the answers he seeks but dreads to find.

4.0 out of 5 stars very good but not brilliant, 17 April 2009
I picked this book due to the wonderful reviews Anne Perry has received on Amazon. It was very good indeed. It reminded me of The American Boy. It is very well written and deeper than most mystery novels with very interesting historical details. The plot was, however, quite drawn out. That aside, I will definitely read more of her books.

5.0 out of 5 stars The beginning of an addiction, 5 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This book was my first meeting with Anne Perry and it was a fine meeting. I could not stop reading the story till the word End. Miss Perry does offer us indeed a very refined story. Her characters are grown ups who behave like real human beings and the story is about real life. She depicts a Victorian man , yet not satisfied with his era deep inside and the story flows, the plot thickens; Hester Latterly appears and many times you wish you could shake Monk and her because they are so human and real. Since then, I have read more books about William Monk and this Nightingale like nurse and still wish for more. Everytime, the intrigue is different and subtle and everytime Miss Perry gives me a new story and treats me as an adult. No jokes, but real touching stories. Ann Perry a storyteller as Sheherazade ?

5.0 out of 5 stars A satisfying series, I always want more..., 15 Feb 2009
By Alder (Scotland) - See all my reviews
"The Face of a Stranger" introduces the reader to William Monk and Hester Latterly, in a series of books set in the mid-1800s. An accident has robbed Monk of his memory, and he painstakingly tries to reconstruct the man that he was, while trying to hide the extent of his injury from his superiors in the police force. Hester worked as a nurse in the Crimea, and has come home to a country where an independent spirit in a woman is still frowned on, and in a single woman is almost unheard of. With both parents dead, she is forced to find her own way in a world that really isn't ready for her... They meet as a result of one of Monk's cases, and a very prickly partnership is born.
Monk and Hester make an appealing combination, and the slow development of their relationship is one of the highlights of the series. I really need to read them all again, now I think about it...
