1.0 out of 5 stars Superficial Coverage of a Worlds Greatest Race, 28 Jun 1999
By A Customer
The 1998 Tour was momentous, with the drugs scandal and the thrilling manner in which Marco Pantani won the race. I hoped that this book would provide some deep insights into the race, based on the author's extensive research. However, the book only covered the issues in a superficial manner and there is absolutley no evidence that the author has spent any time seeking out information sources in order to gain a real understanding of the race, or the extent of the drugs problem. I was left with the feeling that all I had purcashed was a re-working of his daily Tour reports. There are three main strands to the book. The actual race, the drugs scandal, and the life of a Tour journo. The material is scant on the actaul race, with only the crucial stage in the Alps when Pantani won the race, covered with any feeling. The author adds nothing to the drugs scandal story, apart from filling pages with his feelings of guilt on not seeking to expose the drugs scandal in the past. Frankly, I wanted more information on the issue, and was not interested in the author's outpourings of personal woe.

The only people I imagine will enjoy this book, are general sports fans who want to get to know more about cycling's great race. For fans who already follow cycling, this book provides nothing new.
