5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended, 24 April 2007
By ML Jensen (Bath, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is one of three new books in the Historical House series. I loved the first three, and Mary Ann and Miss Mozart is the best yet.
There are lots of lovely historical touches, such as the lessons taught in the girl's boarding school (deportment, dancing, music) and the scenes in the once famous Ranelagh Gardens. It is good to be reminded that Mozart had a sister who was also a gifted musician, and to hear about the concert they both gave in Ranelagh in 1764. There is an exciting story line as Mary Ann struggles to get together the money she hopes will keep her in school after her father loses his fortune.
This is great, accessible historical fiction for 8-12 year olds.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but lacked adventure, 19 April 2009
A Kid's Review
Mary Ann and Miss Mozart
Written by Ann Turnbull
I brought this book because the cover attracted my attention.
It is about girl who goes to a boarding school in Chelsea where she learns things like deportment,French and sewing. Her dream is to become an opera singer but in those days girls would not be allowed to do that. But she is overwhelmed that if you pay extra money she could have singing and harpsichord lessons. She makes lots of friends including a maid called Jenny - she has an exciting night with her. But one day a terrible thing happens and she feels her dreams are shattered forever......

This was a good book but it was not my sort of book. Maybe a bit of adventure and more of a plot. But I felt all the emotions Mary Ann must have felt.

I am not sure if I would read the other ones in the series - I was very glad to get back to the second one in the Inkheart trilogy - Inkspell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!, 25 April 2009
A Kid's Review
Mary Ann dreams of being an opera singer. This dream seems to come true when she gets to enroll at Miss. Neaves school for young ladies, at first this seems a dream come true, singing, dancing, harpiscord. She meets Jenny, a maid with an exceptional voice, they even get to see the Mozarts preform at the Ranleigh Gardens.

Thsi is the first Historical House, I enjoyed it very much, it was slighly hard to get into at first, but after the first chapter, it was really good.
Highly reccomended.
