5.0 out of 5 stars A very thrilling and witty fantasy tale!, 6 Jun 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Black Cauldron (Paperback)
After seeing the Disney movie "The Black Cauldron", I became interested in the books by Lloyd Alexander, and I absolutely loved them! I have read them several times now and they still remain gripping. Even though they are traditionally written for young readers, I think they are suitable for anyone who loves adventure and imagination. The stories are very witty and also pretty exciting. Alexander combines old Welsh myth with very recognisable characters which is really very nice. "The Black Cauldron" has always been one of my favourites parts of "The Chronicles of Prydain". All I can say is that it is pure entertainment and I can recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy, no matter how old you are.

5.0 out of 5 stars Norse-Keltic myth fantasy! ( b-o.jonsson@hotmail.com), 15 Dec 2004
By B. Jonsson "Literate Warlock" (falun, dalarna sweden) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The adventure continues for the pig-keepers boy, Taran, as the dreadful cauldron born warriors appear. Old warriors get new life through the magic cauldron and Taran and Coll must find it and destroy it. Taran is surprised to see that his old friend Coll was once a fearless fighter. The cauldron born cannot be killed, and they get ever more dangerous as they draw closer to the cauldron itself.

Alexander's books mix adventure, fear and humour as the story slowly unravels throughout his five books in the Prydain chronicles. The mix is a wonderful epic fantasy well-known and well-liked throughout the world. Many details are keltic and some Norse ( like the cauldron warriors, the "einherjar" of Norse mythology, which gives the stories depth.

If you haven't read the chronicles yet, I envy you, because you will then have the chance of experiencing them for the first time. I very much look forward to reading them again.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2nd Book in an excellent series, 15 Feb 2008
This is the second book in the Chronicles of Prydain, the characters are a little bit older and, for the most part, a little bit wiser. Taran has found that although there is glory in being a 'hero' that there is more in taking pride in everyday tasks like Assistant Pig Keeping. The companions seek to find and destroy the Black Cauldron, thus ridding Arawn of his Cauldron Born, learning more about themselves on the way. I have just finished reading this to my oldest child and she loved it, sometimes it was a little hard for her to understand, but that encouraged questions. She loves the scatterbrained Eilonwy and little Gurgi. If you enjoy titles such as Narnia, Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter then this is definitely worth considering, not just for Children but adults alike.
