Product Description

Review

Mainstream orthodox faiths have spawned a host of new religions, sects and alternative spiritualities over the last 100 years. This encyclopedia, written for the non-specialist by an authoritative team of specialist contributors, offers a comprehensive guide to 200 of the most significant ones to have emerged over the last century. Each section begins with an overview of the main tradition from which particular new movements have sprouted. Examples include from Christianity, Christian Science; from Judaism, Messianic Judaism; and from Islam, Bah'ai. Other sections include Buddhism, indigenous and pagan traditions, esoteric and New Age traditions and modern western culture. Throughout the book there are feature articles that deal with groups of these new faiths, key themes surrounding new movements, and particular beliefs and practices popular in contemporary new religions.

Product Description

The religious landscape in the Western world today is unrecognizable from that of a century ago. Factors such as increased travel and the widespread use of communication technology have led to the creation of pluralistic societies, in which fewer people are able to avoid learning about other cultures and religious communities. Not only are people more tolerant than they used to be of the religious beliefs of others, but in some cases, they adopt these beliefs in preference to those that are dominant in their own culture. In the West, while Christianity has gone into decline, other religions, including smaller movements such as the Jehovah's Witnesses, the Mormons and many alternative spiritualities such as Paganism, are experiencing growth. This encyclopedia gives readers a comprehensive map of the significant religious and spiritual groups functioning in today's world, especially in the West. The new religions, sects and alternative spiritualities are categorized according to the religious traditions from which they spring. Each section begins with an overview of the parent religion, and then the new religions, sects and alternative spiritualities are described in chronological order. There are also a number of feature articles throughout the book, which deal with groups of new religions, key themes surrounding new religious movements and particular practice beliefs and practices popular in contemporary new religion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive book with excellent background material, 18 Jul 2007
By Vexen Crabtree (UK) - See all my reviews

Hundreds of new religious movements are detailed, some from multiple points of view. They are organized geothematically (Western, Eastern, etc) and as such the book is easy to read from beginning to end, without finding yourself skipping suddenly from one worldview to another.

Most new religions spring from fusions of old ones, so, Partridge has supplied a masterly and comprehensive introduction to major religions and religious themes. Becuase of the excellent background material, you can read up on new religions without previously knowing anything about mainstream religion.

My favorite oddities are the so-called Cargo Cults: isolated island nations who come to devise rituals to worship planes, in order to be blessed with cargo.

This is not a flowery, rose-tinted view of modern religious history; it concentrates on the hard facts so you will find negative and positive aspects of religion described in a factual, referenced, impartial manner.

Scholars of religion and laymen who want nothing more than material for exasperated conversations down the pub, will both find much to absorb in this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great resource, 31 Dec 2005
By Mr. F. Ledwidge (Warsaw, Poland) - See all my reviews

Glancing at the list of contriubutors assures the reader that what you are going to get is a comprehensive and learned guide, and that just what this is. It takes a dispassionate and non-judgemental tone and combines it with good scholarship.

For anyone interested in alternative or 'new' religions this is the book to get.
