Amazon.co.uk Review
According to Ross Clifford Philip Johnson and John Drane in Jesus and the Gods of the New Age, institutional religion seems to be reaching the end of its votive wick and there's a hunger for spirituality at street level that's stronger than ever. Do-it-yourself religion is as popular as B&Q on a Sunday morning, and with celebrity adherents such as Madonna and Richard Gere, it's cool, too.

Clifford and Johnson are Christians who have decided to go on their own search to discover why activities such as yoga, alchemy, astrology, paganism and tarot are becoming so hip. Unlike many ignorant detractors, the authors have set out to listen sympathetically to the stories of today's spiritual searchers, to learn from them and to enter an ongoing conversation with those who have swapped traditional religious belief for their pick 'n' mix alternatives.

The result, therefore, is a highly engaging and thoughtful insight into how Christians might respond to New Age thinking, and how they might better help their own faith to compete in the spiritual marketplace. It is unashamedly evangelistic in its approach--the aim is to "present a practical, field-tested model of how to share your faith and ... apologetically direct conversations towards Jesus' call to discipleship". But the strength of this book lies in the wealth of ordinary examples it presents, in its quest to discover what Jesus means to the post-religious 21st century.

We discover, too, that Christianity has plenty more spiritual connections with everyday life than most of us had realised--and that, in today's spiritual supermarket, it needn't necessarily be left on the shelf. --Brian Draper

Product Description
Today many people are searching for spiritual meaning but for the most part they are not conducting their search anywhere near a church. It is more likely that they are delving into things like alchemy, paganism, gnosicism, tarot, and yoga. In this book, the authors offer help to Christians who want to relate to today's searchers in ways that are meaningful and effective. From their own wide experience of evangelism with New Agers, they share stories of their encounters and give pointers, rooted in the Bible, to the way forward for the Church.

5.0 out of 5 stars An insightful analysis of New Age spirituality, 24 Oct 2001
By A Customer
I came to this book having read 'Beyond Prediction: the Tarot and your Spirituality', a book written by the same two authors together with Scottish academic John Drane (who also writes the foreword to this one). I had found their work on the tarot informative and inspirational, so this was the obvious next step.
I guess that my own spiritual search would classify as 'New Age' by the kind of definitions they use here. Having read their book on the tarot, I knew that they were Christians, but not your typical Bible-bashers, so I wasn't surprised to find that instead of rubbishing other people's spirituality - like a lot of Christians I know - they offer an open, sympathetic, and understanding treatment of all sorts of topics that include wicca, paganism, angels, past lives, near death experiences, and a whole lot more. These guys have clearly done their homework. They know what they're talking about because - unlike a lot of others - they have met with and listened to what people are saying. The book has enormous value just as an account of what is believed by so many different groups today. But they are not gullible, as every chapter has sympathetic critiques of the subjects, and they also share a Christian perspective on it all. This turns out to be not so much 'Christian' (in the sense of referring back to the views of 'the church'), as Jesus-centred. His teachings and example are taken seriously, and I liked that because it enables them to cut through all the rhetoric and history of conflict that has often marred 'the church', to uncover some of the essence of the faith. In the process, Ross Clifford and Philip Johnson come across as nice guys, the sort anyone could have an intelligent dialogue with - a bit like I imagine Jesus himself to have been. Not judgmental, but not soft or sentimental either. They know how to be challenging in a laid-back sort of way. If there were more Christians like them, maybe the church wouldn't be in such a mess. It would certainly be more attractive to those who are seriously searching for truth wherever it might be found. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book (and 'Beyond Prediction') to anyone who is seriously searching for sensible answers to some of life's biggest questions.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that will inspire Christians to share their faith., 15 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This is a timely and much needed book. At a time when church going is shrinking fast many people are turning to New Age spirituality to find meaning in life. The authors present clear and sympathetic accounts of a number of New Age philosophies and then using case studies demonstrate how the Christian faith can be presented to New Age seekers.
The fact that this book is not based on theory alone but on the authors' personal experience of engaging in dialogue with New Age seekers makes this book challenging and inspirational. As a result I will definately be attending some New Age festivals and seeing for myself what openings they present for spreading the Christian faith. For those who are inspired to have a go for themselves "Jesus and the Gods of the New Age" contains two chapters with practical ideas. One gives some excellent exercises and tools for transformation and the other insights into the practical issues involved in this type of ministry.
This book is excellent value. No evangelist or would-be evangelist should be without it.
