"For a fleeting instant Maria thought she saw a little white horse with a flowing mane and tail, head raised, poised, halted in mid-flight, as though it had seen her and was glad."

5.0 out of 5 stars Youth revisited, 3 Oct 2006
By A. Simpson "Simpsoni" (Nottingham, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have just re- read The Little White Horse in one sitting on a beach in Tenerife. It is 25 years since I last read it and indeed had it read to me and I was immediately transported into a richly descriptive and morally fair world which I had forgotten. The warmth of the writing stayed with me and as my copy is battered I thought I would see if it is still in print and lo and behold here it is. Having read the reviews it would appear to me that the two critics who didn't like it came to the story later in life -the rest of us fans are re-reading a delight from childhood and revisiting feelings we had as children. You do have to view the words in historical context ( as you do with other writers such as Enid Blyton) but that doesn't detract from what is a great story for 8+ year old little girls who still want a bit of magic from a bygone age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, magical little story - won the Carnegie Medal for children's literature in 1946., 28 Feb 2008

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I was drawn to reading 'The Little White Horse' when I first saw J. K. Rowling's comments about the book ...'I absolutely adored 'The Little White Horse. It had a cracking plot... It was scary and romantic in parts and had a feisty heroine.' So, having not read the book as a child I've come to it as an adult and thoroughly enjoyed it!

The year is 1842 and Maria Merryweather is a petite plain orphaned girl with silvery-grey eyes, straight reddish hair and a thin pale face. She has had to leave the London that she knows, selling her father's house to pay debts, and is off to live with her nearest relative at the Manor of Moonacre in the West Country, taking with her her much-loved, if stern, governess and their canine companion Wiggins.

Maria takes to her cousin Sir Benjamin Merryweather immediately, and falls in love with Moonacre with very little effort. She soon meets the friendly villagers from nearby Silverydew, is re-acquainted with an old childhood friend, Robin, and learns of an ancient story about the foundation of Moonacre which will have a great effect on her future... Soon Maria longs to be the one to restore tranquility and peace to her much-loved Moonacre Valley. Throughout it all, more than anything, Maria longs for another glimpse of the little white horse she first spotted on her arrival at Moonacre one wintry moonlit night...

This is a lovely heart-warming story of innocence, friendship, discovery, magic and ultimately good fighting evil. A pure delight.

Look out for the new film based on the novel, which is set to appear sometime in 2008 - filming apparently started in October '07. The film is due to be called 'The Secret of Moonacre'.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most magical children's novels ever written, 2 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This beautiful, mysterious novel about the orphaned, red-haired Maria, and how she comes to the enchanted valley of Moonacre to live with her uncle casts a powerful spell. From the moment Maria and her saintly governess travel through the tunnel and see the figure of the little white horse (or unicorn) poised in the moonlight, you're gripped. Maria's family is under a curse, so that the men and women in it will always quarrel and part, unless she can make peace with the fierce brigands who hate her sunny ancestors. With the help of several unusually intelligent animals, including a lion, a lazy Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a pony and a wise hare,Maria and her friend Robin eventually break the spell.

Everything about this novel is perfection. Maria's bedroom alone, with its tiny door and starry ceiling will keep any girl entranced, just as the comedy and adventure will enthral boys. Exciting, funny, vivid and romantic, this is the perfect read for any child of 8 and over. If you enjoy it, do also try Henrietta's House, which is "almost a fairytale", but slightly more grown-up.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring
The pace of this book is far too slow to engage children. The author spends too long setting the scene and therefore the book is dull and unexciting. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Rejuvenating.
I love this book. Refreshingly uncynical and set in beautiful places, it's like an elixir, which I can sip when feeling jaded and world-weary.
