Product Description

Product Description

Following on from "Treasures From Bible Times" and "Discoveries from the Time of Jesus", this book provides a comprehensive survey of biblical archaeology. Behind a sealed doorway lies the lost treasure of King Tutankhamun. A shepherd casually aims a stone at a hole in a cliff, and the Dead Sea Scrolls are discovered. An excavation to the north of Galilee reveals the remains of a synagogue from the time of Jesus. It is stories such as these that give archaeology its fascination. The treasures of the Bible lands are as varied as the stories that surround their discovery. Gold and silver, ancient manuscripts, tomb pictures, palace ivories - all find their place in this account, enabling the reader to picture in detail the way people lived in Bible times, and the momentous places and events they witnessed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, well informed and lavishly illustrated., 17 Nov 2001

Alan Millard is a well qualified academic with the ability to write succinctly and to communicate to the non-specialist. In this work he describes and illustrates some of the discoveries made by arcaheologists, which relate to, and give corroborating background to, various accounts in the Bible. This is useful to the committed Christian, but is also of interest to those without any particular religious affiliation who are interested in history and what can be learned about it through archaeology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Digging Deep, 7 Sep 2005

I very much enjoyed Millard's Discoveries from Bible Times. It is by someone who understands their subject enough to make it comprehensible for those who don't. Millard has not been slow to tackle some of the difficult questions, and to show which side of the fence he with reason is on. He has sketched many digs into small & digestible units of good read.
The quality of the printed book, with fine artwork, makes it a treat to have on the shelf, and one of those mines of information well worth reading cover to cover. He has updated quite a bit of archaeology, showing at times where others have, with less limited modals, in good faith somewhat mislead. No doubt Millard's word will not be the last word, but should remain secure in most aspects, though further refined with further studies.
