An Introduction to the Philosophy of Mind provides a lively and accessible introduction to all the main themes and arguments currently being debated in this area. The book examines and criticizes four major theories of mind: Dualism, Mind/Brain Identity, Behaviourism and Functionalism.

It argues that while consciousness and our mental lives depend upon physical processes in the brain, they are not reducible to those processes. The differences between mental and physical states, mind/body causality, the problem of other minds, and personal identity are also explored in full.

The second edition of this well respected text has been revised to include a new chapter which explores Aristotle’s philosophy of psychology and mind. It also includes new material on the Turing test and has been expanded and updated throughout.

The book is designed to help students think for themselves about all the issues identified above, and contains exercises throughout the text to stimulate and challenge the reader. Objectives are clearly set out at the start of every chapter to enable students to check their understanding as they proceed, and each chapter ends with questions to consider. There are discussions of the most cited contemporary writers in the field, so that the reader can gain a rounded perspective of the debates.

If you are an A' level student or just learning about the philosophy of mind for the first time, then this book is a clear winner. Despite this being a new book on the market, it as been adopted at my college as an essential reference guide and teaching aid for the 4th unit of the new A' level philosophy course. I have searched through many books on this subject and most are either aimed at students who already have some foundation knowledge in the philosophy of mind and therefore, are too advanced or are just too vague for the needs of students starting out with their studies of the mind. Maslin, being a 6th form philosophy teacher, addresses these issues in a far more efficient way than many other more 'academic' approaches I have come across.

This one volume deals with all the main approaches to the mind/body problems: Cartesian dualism, identity theory (both type-type and token-token), epiphenomenalism, analytical behaviourism, functionalism, and non-reductive monism. Each theory is fully explained and critically analysed in turn. Other mind/body problems are also addressed individually: psycho-physical causation, the problem of other minds and continued personal identity through the physical and the psychological. At the beginning of each chapter there is a set of 'objectives' that the reader should be able to fulfil upon completion of the chapter. There are also exercises and questions throughout the book aimed to help the reader think about the problems being discussed and test knowledge. Each chapter concludes with a helpful further reading list. A glossary of useful terms in also included at the back of the book.

I took over lecture duties on a 2nd year University course on the Philosophy of Mind in which this book was a set text, and was rather puzzled that anyone could describe this book as 'introductory'. It certainly isn't. One student, an extremely bright one at that, admitted that he found parts of the book "incomprehensible." While I wouldn't go quite that far, I have to say that this is a book more suited to 3rd year or even Masters-level students. Some chapters are admirably clear, but others don't come close to achieving the sort of clarity you want from a course text.

As an ex-student of Keith's, I thought I'd add a general review. I have to say I think you'll be hard-pushed to find a more enthusiastic and passionate scholar of philosophy. As a teacher he finds every aspect of the discipline fascinating, and this really helps generate excitement about what you are studying.

Philosophy of mind is notoriously complicated and Keith's arguments help to clarify an area where no theorist has any definite answers and where it is sometimes hard to even find a vocabulary to discuss these issues. Keith has plenty of illustrative examples to bring such issues into focus. Even though he didn't recognise me last time we met, I still have to recommend this book, he's a great teacher :)
