Review
'I like its common-sense practicality, its firm belief in honest reporting, and its commitment to quality... David Randall's fluent style and his superb range of examples make this book a pleasure to read. Anyone who wants to be a journalist should go through it - again, and again, and again.' --Val Williams, Press Division, The Thomson Foundation 'This is one of the best books around about plying the trade. Packed with handy hints and anecdotes ... An essential, down-to-earth guide to what the job is all about' --Press Wise Bulletin

Product Description
This fully updated introduction to all aspects of being a journalist includes new sections on handling numbers ad statistics, computer assisted reporting and writing for the Web, as well as an extensive revised chapter on what makes a good reporter, an a new section on sources. Irrespective of language or culture, good journalists share a common commitment to the search for truth, often in far from ideal circumstances. With this assertion, David Randall emphasises that good journalism isn't just about universal objectives: it must also involve the acquisition of a range of skills that will empower journalists to operate in an industry where ownership, technology and information is constantly changing. This acclaimed handbook challenges old attitudes, procedures and techniques of journalism where they are seen as cynical and sloppy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Universal Journalist, 15 Oct 2003
By T Edwards (West Bromwich, West Midlands United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
As a young journalism student at postgrad school, I recently purchased this book, and found it inspiring to say the least. It's a great read, with 21 chapters in total. I refer back to it frequently when pondering common questions all journalists must face. David Randall doesn't do sloppy, and it shows; the book redfines what quality copy is all about. The guy has a passion for the business and it shines through. The only thing that the book perhaps lacks, is a section on court reporting, but other than that, this publication is the best book on journalism on the market and is a must-read.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't praise this book enough!, 16 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Unlike most journalism books, I read this one straight through at once! Immensely readable, David Randall's book fills in the gap between dry, informative 'how to' books, theoretical academic essays and entertaining autobiography. As a beginner journalist myself, I found myself clinging to Randall for advice and reassurance - yes, I am not alone or unusual! His book is also full of surprising quotes, which supplement the text, leaving you with something to think about. Though I'm a literature graduate and particularly fussy about books, I cannot praise Randall's enough! Unbelievable.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent reference for trainee journalists, 2 April 1999
By A Customer
The course tutor on the post graduate pre-entry NCTJ course in Cornwall referred frequently to this book - so much so that I decided to read it for myself. I found it inspirational and useful. It inspired me to work to the highest ideals of investigative journalism, as well as providing helpful practical advice on how to do the job on a daily basis. Well worth the money, and one year into the job I still refer to it.
