Product Description

Product Description

An examination of the controversies that surround education, tradition and history in an international context. The author examines the sources of the controversy that have arisen around the question of history in Germany, Japan, Britain and the USA. He argues that the conventional distinctions between left and right, or conservative, liberal and socialist have little relevance to the discussion, suggesting that even bitter intellectual foes such as conservatives and the cultural left share common assumptions regarding the past and the nature of history.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'history', not 'History', 27 April 1999
By A Customer
This well-informed study takes a critical look at the history of 'History' (as a discipline since the second world war). Furedi argues convincingly that a number of schools of historical thought, such as New Historicism, can be understood as being ideologically motivated. Having engaged with a multitude of thinkers over the course of the book, his final chapter is an inspiring plea for human agency, which addresses a number of commonly-held misconceptions about Marx.
