Synopsis
A book on the history of contraception which focuses on the work of the Victorian campaigner, George Drysdale and his family. Drysdale saw contraception as the solution to poverty, celibacy and prostitution at a time when Victorian prudery made such a subject taboo. He advocated, before there was a women's medical movement, the training of women doctors and discussed the treatment of women patients from the unusual position of a male feminist. Miriam Benn details not only Drysdale's public and private life but also the struggles of his brother, Charles, who was a convert to his teachings along with his partner Dr Alice Vickery and their son, Charles Vickery Drysdale. "Predicaments of Love", also explores the Malthusian angle to Drysdale's work and reveals the cautious conservatism of the women's movement through their resistance to contacts with the propagandists for contraception.
