Mystery about a trial staking the life of an innocent woman against an overwhelming mass of circumstantial evidence.

Victoria Lamartine stood a prisoner at the bar of justice, charged with the murder of a British officer, entangled in a web of evidence so skillfully woven that there seemed no hope for her at all.

She scorned to plead for mercy. She refused to use her position as a woman ro earn clemency of the court. Although her cause seemed utterly lost, she held to the very end that she was innocent.

And then a brilliant trial lawyer, and his unorthodox assistants combing the countryside on two continents, turned up evidence so startling that even the accused could hardly credit it.
