2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 17 Jan 2001
This review is from: Deceit (Paperback)
Having read Ms Francis' first three books I was so disappointed with "Deceit". I loved her first book "The Night Sky" and was equally absorbed with "Red Crystal" although "Wolf Winter" did take me a little longer to get into. "Deceit", while mildly intriguing, failed to make me care about the characters. I tried to read the book while travelling but I came home with it unfinished and it has remained that way since. I think that one of the main problems is that the storyline, man missing presumed dead and finances not what they should have been, is old hat (see John Grisham's "The Partner") and so fails to hold any real surprises. Perhaps when Ms Francis wrote the book the theme was unique but now it simply failed to hold my attention. If you have bothered to read this far I would advise you to read her first 2 books and ignore this one because it really doesn't match the quality of the others.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of reading time, 30 Dec 2007
This review is from: Deceit (Paperback)
My first Clare Francis book which has done nothing to make me want to read anymore by this author. Boring or what! The story doesn't take off until about 300 pages in at which time I am wondering why I am still bothering and even then does nothing to make me go "wow". If this is really "the best she has done yet..." according to Frances Fyfield, Daily Telegraph (on the back of the book) then I definitely won't be reading anymore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make your own mind up, but do read it!, 6 Nov 2009

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Deceit (Paperback)
I have just finished reading Deceit, and enjoyed every word. In the spirit of the best thrillers, the plot was full of twists and turns, red herrings and a surprise at the end. The characters were believable, and to the reviewer who didn't believe that an inexperienced sailor could manage a yacht singlehanded, one needs only to look at the author, if she doesn't know what's possible with a yacht then no-one does!

This is a book that demands you read every word in order to fully appreciate what is going on, and I have done this. A great read.

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointing
A very disappointing book. It took for ever to accumulate any momentum. The characters are singularly unlikeable. Read more
