4.0 out of 5 stars An unjustly neglected writer, 24 Feb 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Witching Murder (Paperback)
Jennie Melville is perhaps better known as Gwendoline Butler, author of the Coffin mysteries. Most of the Melville books are unfortunately out of print but they are well worth seeking out. Melville's books seem to take place in a world of their own, her plots can be extremely unlikely but she has the knack of making you suspend disbelief. This book like most books by this author has as its core questions of identity. Senior policewoman Charmian Daniels is on sick leave in her home in Windsor when her neighbour, a white witch (or is she so white?) is a suspect in a murder case. Charmian is asked to help in a semi-official capacity by her friend in the Windsor police, Dolly Barstow. Layer upon layer is stripped away from people and situations until we find out what really happened. The book is part of a series and an added value is to get reacquainted with characters from the other books but it is not necessary to have read other books by the author to enjoy this one.
