Amazon.co.uk Review
Hannah's father never seems to have time for her and so she is often left alone and lonely. She loves gorillas and longs for one for her birthday. On the night before her birthday she wakes up to find a parcel, containing a toy gorilla, by her bed. Disappointed she goes back to sleep. Later that night though, something magical happens--a real gorilla appears and takes her on a magical journey.

This book won Anthony Browne both the Kate Greenaway Medal and the Kurt Maschler Award and has become a classic picture book to be enjoyed on many levels by children of all ages. --Philippa Reece

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever!, 14 Sep 2001
By A Customer
This book by Anthony Browne is undoubtedly one of his best books. The illustrations, particularly the gorilla's eyes, are fantastic, and my friends and I, although we are not children anymore, enjoy reading this book. The storyline is touching, the books is formatted well but those pictures just blew me away. One of the best children's picture books I have ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!, 10 Mar 2004
By S. Edwards-Sim "sme" (uk) - See all my reviews

This is a wonderful story about a little girl called Hannah whose dad is too busy to take her to the zoo. On her birthday she asks for a gorilla but her dad just buys her a toy until in the night something amazing happens and her toy gorilla comes to life and takes Hannah to the zoo. The illustrations in this book are absolutely beautiful particularly the pictures of the monkeys in the zoo who look so sad. My 2 year old now thinks that all monkeys are sad and can't be persuaded otherwise. I would reccommed this to anyone with toddlers because the idea of the story is fantastic.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hidden message, 23 Oct 2007

This review is from: Gorilla (Big Books) (Hardcover)
Yes it has beautiful illustrations but beware!

This story seems to be teaching children that it's ok to sneak out of your house in the middle of the night and to keep secrets from your parents.

I am shocked and horrified to see it back on the shelves! I read part of it once to my Nursery Class many years ago and stopped part of the way through and asked them if they would tiptoe quietly out of their house being careful not to wake their parents in the middle of the night and they all said 'YES'. I threw the book in the bin and we had a discussion about it.

In this day and age it is an even more dangerous message. This could be the start of the 'grooming' process!!!
