Product Description
Amazon.co.uk Review
Ready or not, here she comes! That clever, mischievous, loving matriarch of the nursery knows more verses and ditties than you can shake a stick at. From the familiar "Peter, Peter, pumpkin eater" and "Here we go round the mulberry bush" to the more obscure "I'm Dusty Bill from Vinegar Hill," this warm, lovely, good-humoured collection of nursery rhymes is sure to find a place on the shelf of classics. On the heels of her first award-winning collection, My Very First Mother Goose, world-renowned folklorist Iona Opie has brought together still more of her never-ending supply of childhood verse. And once again the incomparable Rosemary Wells (Max's Bath, Max's Bedtime, Max's Ride) has joined Opie to enchant young readers as they blend ancient verse with fresh new pictures. Soft, appealing watercolours depict a comical menagerie of ducks, bunnies, cats and guinea pigs, wittily interpreting more than 50 old favourites. No new parent should be without this indispensable treasure. (Ages 0 to 4 years) --Emilie Coulter --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Synopsis
An exuberant companion to the bestselling nursery rhyme collection, My Very First Mother Goose. "A magical selection" enthused The Times about My Very First Mother Goose, the first collaboration between Iona Opie, the leading expert on children's lore and literature, and Rosemary Wells, one of the finest of all living picture book artists. Now, the two have teamed up again to produce this equally captivating volume for the very young. With over fifty-five favourite nursery rhymes, each illustrated with glorious inventiveness and vitality, this book fairly sings out, "Mother Goose is back - and so is the magic!"

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect present for a new baby - well, the parents anyway!, 21 Feb 2001
Friends have just had a baby and wanted a nursery rhyme collection to be able to start reading to their new daughter. My first thought was to come to this one as the illustrations will delight the baby and the rhymes will bounce the parents right back 30 years or so. Wonderful

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer delight, 2 Mar 2008
By Alan Paxton (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Iona Opie must know more about the nursery rhymes of the English-speaking world than anyone else alive, and her selection is consistently good - some familiar, some not so well-known, some well-known but with an unfamiliar twist. Rosemary Wells' illustrations are big, brightly-coloured, full of interesting detail, and offer a witty commentary on the texts. A cast of animals recurs throughout the book, giving the diverse rhymes an overall unity, and they are drawn without the sickly sentimentality that all-too-often accompanies humanised animals in picture books. This is book 2 - the first volume, "My very first Mother Goose", is just as good, but with a higher proportion of well-known rhymes. My 2 year old daughter loves both of them.
