5.0 out of 5 stars Every book in this series is good, but this is the BEST!, 12 Oct 2001
When reading the other books, Julia seems not as inconspicuous as Gwen, but still not very noticeable. However, when you read the dividing sea, you find this is not the case. Julia has, in my opinion, the most exciting story of all. The first third of the book centers on her working as a nurse in france and her relationship with Geffory, and then of course his death (which you know about from previous books). Her sorrow is so powerfully written, it made me cry. It really shows that when a loved one dies you can't forget about it immediately. Then she marries again to the man whom i and my friends guessed she would from reading Frances' story. But still she has problems because she cannot stop thinking about Geffory.
This is a powerful and thought provoking book, which shows World War I with real people and the terrible saddness of it all. I couldn't put it down, it had all the necessary parts of a book; romance, sensitivity and action. Read the first two books (the Silent Shore and the Beckoning Hills)first and then deffinitely worth a read,or mabey even two!

4.0 out of 5 stars Much more involving read than the other three in this quartet of novels., 7 Jul 2009
By Script Angel (Solihull, England) - See all my reviews
This is probably a far more dramatic emotional journey than is afforded to the other sisters. There is more attempt at a psychological study but the writing still feels a little superficial. Julia's story also feels rather isolated from those of her sisters (a failing of all the novels) and it was difficult to get an understanding of her relationships with her sisters.

The narrative is more moving and varied than those of the other three novels. The actions and emotions of the protagonist Julia are less predictable than those of the other sisters. That said the writing is still a little lacking in depth of character insight. However, that is less evident in this novel because of the very busy narrative once Julia goes to France as a nurse in the Great War. Both her experiences there and her relationship with Geoffrey Mackenzie make for a vivid and engaging narrative. Julia is more clearly affected by her experiences (partly because they are so extreme) than the other main characters. This gives Julia a strong character arc and it makes the ending more satisfying because we have seen her grow and change through the narrative. Julia's story also covers (in depth) a far longer time span than any of the other stories. Seeing her grow into a woman, a wife and a mother gives her narrative more depth and makes for a more fully-rounded character study than the other novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book I have ever read, Made me cry!, 17 Oct 2001
By A Customer
It is about four sisters set in the early 1900's. It follows their lives with their guardian's, the Mackenzies. Prepare to cry a lot because the author writes in a very moving way. A brilliant storyline showing the girls' love for art, and their love for the Mackenzie's. I have never enjoyed a book so much. The Dividing Sea is one of four books in 'The Quantocks Quartet' series. The Dividing Sea is written in the eyes of Julia Purcell and the others follow her sisters' lives. All brilliant, all a must read. I recommend it, which is why I rate it 5 stars!
