Review
The title leads us to expect a large Alsatian as hero - but Bertie isn't a watchdog because he's big, or mean, or scary, but because he's only the size of a watch. When one night a tough robber breaks in, it's the robber who crouches down, bares his teeth and barks, blasting Bertie off the two hind legs on which he stands. His barking alerts the police who rush in and arrest him - and Bertie gets a medal for bravery. This is a great story of role reversal, with colourful, dramatic illustrations making the robber seem even larger, the barking even louder. Ideal for beginner readers and reading aloud. Ages 3-6 (Kirkus UK)

A hilarious story about the triumph of the underdog, with plenty of visual jokes! Bertie was a watchdog. He was just a very small one. But size isn't everything as one big and nasty burglar finds out in this knockabout comedy celebrating the triumph of the underdog! Illustrated with waggish humour by Arthur Robins, famous for his Seriously Silly Stories, this hilarious picture book is long in more ways than one! Printed in an unusual format, with fifty-six pages rather than the usual thirty-two, it'll keep children and their parents laughing looong after they've put it down!
