Product Description

Product Description

One stormy night the sea-thing child, a draggled heap of scales and feathers, is flung up on the beach. Afraid of the wild waves and the storm skies, he meets a fiddler crab with no bow and together they avoid facing their fears. Finally, though, he finds his star, his courage and his ocean self.

4.0 out of 5 stars A moving tale of self discovery with superb illustrations., 12 Jul 2001
By A Customer
One stormy night the sea thing child is washed up upon a lonely shore. Feeling lost and afraid of the sea, he makes himself a shelter in which to huddle down. As he grows up he ventures into the world and makes friends with other creatures in this world. However, he realises that the sea and world are things to explore - an adventure awaits him. Eventually he finds his wings and leaves his sandy shore and friends behind to find out who he really is. That is where the story leaves the reader who is left with their own imaginings - the tone is upbeat and it is easy to imagine the Sea Thing Child embarking on wonderful happy adventures. The book can be used as a simple picture book story or on a deeper level to help explain that the scary things in life are sometimes the things we most need to face up to. Beautiful emotional illustrations help to draw the reader into this world of storms and high waves into which the Sea Thing Child bravely sets off.

5.0 out of 5 stars also a metaphor for the psychotherapeutic voyage, 3 Jun 2002
this book affected me very deeply, although it did not have the same effect on my 6-year-old. I would strongly recommend it to anyone embarking on a voyage of self-discovery - the themes of the therapeutic exploration are all there, and the various characters (the confused, tearful crab who senses his need for self-expression but is frightened to explore it; the rather get-on-with-it/none-of-this-emotional-nonsense albatross; the earth-motherish (or, rather, sea-motherish), positive, trusting-in-nature eel) simply, subtly and yet powerfully illustrate the issues facing all human beings. I was thoroughly moved by The Sea-thing Child's work on the containment of his own confusion and fears first by building a tangible fortress made of stones etc, then moving on to more symbolic traces in the sand as his inner sense of confidence grows. I hope I am not putting you off: it's absolutely wonderul!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A poetic story about courage, 9 Nov 2009
By Gunilla E. P. Kurdahl "Gunilla" (Denmark) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is easy to love if you are a parent. It's poetic and beautiful and tells a story about courage and lack of courage. It also deals with feeling like fear and sadness. To an adult this book makes sense. What it's like for children is hart to say. My children at 5 and 7 lets me read it to them even if it is long, has many difficult words in it and is no typical book for children.
There is a picture on every page.

5.0 out of 5 stars a deep and inspiring story
i agree, this story may affect adults more deeply than children, but that's the wonder of good picture books-they have many levels to them. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars A gentle, touching book that stays with you.
The Sea-thing Child is a lovely story of a baby... well, sea-thing (a heap of feathers and scales) who is blown out of his nest during a storm and has to grow up alone. Read more
