5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, 6 Jul 2008
Introduce the book
Dick King Smith has created this spirited little heroine who is small but determined.

Tell about the book, but don't give away the ending!
On her fifth birthday, Sophie gets a model farm and lots of miniature animals to go with it. She also gets a tractor and trailer to go on her farm. Her birthday presents are nice but what she wants most is a real pet - a cat, like Tom (the stray), for example. Will she ever get one?

Tell about your favourite part or make a connection
I like the ending where she gets quite a surprise - but a good surprise.

Give a recommendation
If you like animals, little girls and adventurous stories then this is definitely the book for you.

Give a rating
I think that, like all other Dick King-Smith books, this is a wonderful book and I would rate this book 9/ 10.

5.0 out of 5 stars The 'small but very determined' Sophie has kittens!, 16 Feb 2001
By A Customer
An absolutely fascinating story about a little girl called Sophie and her twin brothers Matthew and Mark. Matthew and Mark are typical twin brothers who are always teasing their 'small but very determined' young sister whose ambition is to be a lady farmer.

Sophie always looks like she's been through a hedge backwards and has an untidy mop of dark brown hair. Sophie's usual clothes are old jeans, a jumper and wellies but on her first day at school she has to wear a skirt and hates it!

At her new school she meets up with Dawn; a very'pretty' little girl who looks just a little too pretty for Sophie. They're quite the opposite; Dawn being a 'Toy Poodle' and Sophie being a'fierce Bulldog'. I love the way Sophie keeps saying "you're mowldy, stupid and assive".

Sophie really wants an animal of her own. Sophie's in luck; she finds a stray black cat and names him Tom, but she's not allowed to keep him unless a mouse comes into the house. When the family are having tea Sophie's mother discovers a mouse and screeches. Then Sophie is allowed to keep Tom.

Sophie finds out that Tom is actually a girl when he(she) has kittens! Sophie changes Tom's name to 'Tomboy'.

This is a very exciting book because you never know what Sophie is going to get up to next. You just wanted to read more and more. I could barely put the book down!

1.0 out of 5 stars As a father I was extremely disapointed by this book., 14 April 2002
By A Customer
Dick King-Smith's Mrs Jolly stories are charming and consequently I had great hopes for this book. However these hopes were dashed when I read the book to my 5 year old. Sophie is an extremly unpleasant little child with even more obnoxious brothers and rather smug parents. I spent much of my time attempting to make excuses for the poor behaviour that is portrayed as acceptable and 'cute'. I am very glad that my daughter and her school friends appear to be better socially adjusted, considerate and caring than the children portrayed in this story.
