How can it be that a book with only one word, repeated throughout, can be so good? The proof is in the pudding (well, the jungle actually) in Jez Alborough's superb
Hug,a fantastic picture book that follows a baby monkey on the hunt for his mum and a cuddle.
As our little friend wanders through the jungle, enlisting the help of other jungle animals as they snuggle together with their young families. And all the time the story is told purely by the expression on the little monkey's face as his hopes are built and dashed again until eventually, with a huge smile, he finds his mum and reaps the reward.
Hug is a clever, entertaining and unusual book that portrays the art of illustration for children at its very best: characters are brought to life through facial expressions and body language, interacting with each other via the stroke of a brush, creating images that children will recognise and understand instantly.
Ideal for sharing with small children, this lovely book is a warm, comforting read that cannot fail to please. (Ages 1-4) --Susan Harrison
Review
Through beautifully drawn pictures, we discover a little monkey who needs something very special. There is no text, because this story is skilfully told through the colour pictures that take us on a journey through the jungle meeting the animals, from elephants and giraffes to snakes and lions. It gives the opportunity to explain to children how parents feel when their children get lost. The elephants do their best to comfort and help the little lost monkey but they cannot quite understnad what is missing. Eventually, they realize that it's one important animal. As his name booms out from the nearby forest, Bobo's tears disappear and he runs as fast as he can towards the anxious sound. He grins from ear to ear and Bobo and his mum give each other the biggest hug ever. Everyone is so happy that little lost Bobo is reunited with his mum that they all stand together and shout HUG!
