Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland has continuously delighted readers, young and old, for more than a century. A classic tale that has been interpreted by many an outstanding artist over the years, this remarkable story of one little girl who embarks on possibly one of the most amazing, fantastical adventures in literary history has more than stood the test of time.

Here, in this stunning new edition, Helen Oxenbury, one of the most exceptional contemporary children's illustrators, turns her hand to what is certainly no small project and has succeeded in surpassing expectation. More abundantly illustrated than other editions of the same work, this unabridged version is packed with contemporary and accessible interpretations of the kaleidoscope of characters--the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts--who have each captured the imaginations of generations of children.

Alice herself is portrayed as a thoroughly modern miss--casually dressed, personable, and spirited--and her surroundings are brought to effervescent life with a warmth, depth and distinctive sense of humour that perfectly complements the shenanigans of the topsy-turvy world of Wonderland.

A perfect gift for any child, this stylish, must-have version of Carroll's unforgettable fantasy is perfect for confident young readers to read alone, or is ideal for sharing as a bedtime read with an adult. (Age 7 and over) --Susan Harrison

Review

Helen Oxenbury has managed to reinvent the character of Alice as a contemporary child, simply dressed in a blue shift dress, and yet she retains the magic of this most marvellous of childhood fantasies. The White Rabbit, the March Hare, the Mad Hatter, the Duchess are all refreshingly new, but instantly recognizable. The pictures will captivate a new audience without alienating the generation brought up on Tenniel's illustrations. (6 yrs +) (Kirkus UK)

Laszlo Matulay has based his big splashy colored pictures on the traditional Tenniel drawings, but the text adaptation holds small justification. The familiar rhythms and pattern of words which make Alice a family possession through life have gone, and what is left serves merely as transitional material connecting the favorite poems which, thank goodness, have not been tampered with. 5.0 out of 5 stars I have to say my daugter agrees with Alice..., 21 Jan 2005
if there are no pictures it's not an interesting book ;o) Thandfully this edition of Alice has the most wonderful pictures! Detailed enough to help my nearly 4 year old recount teh chapter she has just heard with no prompts from me. However, that's not why it gets 5 stars from me, the real bunus to me was that it is printed onto cream paper with clear space between the lines of text making it much easier on this tired mummy's eyes at the end of the day :o)

4.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing and updated version of the children's classic, 25 Oct 1999
Alice in Wonderland has been always been a 'classic' for many generations of children. Nowadays, however, Lewis Carroll's masterpiece has lost some of its appeal to today's children because they feel the original is dated and out of touch.

This edition, illustrated by Helen Oxenberry, uses the original text but makes the story so much more appealing and accessible to children by breaking up the text into more manageable 'bite sized chunks' and incorporating the excellent contemporary illustrations that she is famous for.

An essential and worthwhile addition for any child's collection. Buy it...

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect Alice for our times, 19 Oct 2000
By A Customer
The wonderful illustrations by Helen Oxenbury break the stranglehold on the imagination that Tenniel's originals have had for so long. The new, lighter approach makes this a children's book once more, rescuing the story from an adults-only ghetto.

My first impressions of this book were that it was like reading C.S. Lewis on cheap drugs. The events are complete non sequiturs and the changes in plot are worse. Read more

I loved this book as a child. I had the edition with the Tenniel drawings, which I loved, but which when I look at them now seem a little surreal. Read more
